Organization

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services (AAMHCS) is a Community Health Centre that is committed to and works to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. We do this by facilitating access to services and addressing systemic inequities. The Centre envisions a future in which diverse individuals, families and communities can achieve health with dignity.

Position Responsibilities

In this role, the Health Promoter provides leadership in our Among Friends program, coordinating and delivering services to LGBTQI community members, in particular recently arrived asylum seekers. Working with key stakeholders, this position develops and sustains key service delivery partnerships focused on core settlement and adjustment needs, in particular employment readiness. The successful candidate will have excellent project management skills, be highly organized and outcomes focused. The Health Promoter must be familiar with newcomer and refugee context in particular, aware of refugee settlement processes and requirements and barriers faced by specific groups, in particular LGBTQI community. This is not a developmental role, we have a robust program, the successful candidate must be able to hit the ground running

Health Promotion
  • Work with other organizations and community groups to identify health priorities and work in collaboration with the community to plan and implement strategies to achieve better health outcomes.
  • Be familiar with and use diverse health promotion strategies including health education, creating supportive environments, community development, policy building and re-orienting health services to support people and communities to increase control over and improve their health.
  • Act as a resource for community groups by facilitating workshops, seminars, information sessions or groups; by providing consultation, referrals and information; and by advocating on behalf of, for or with groups in the community.
  • Mobilize the existing human and material resources in the community to enhance the capacity of the community to affect social change by developing self-help and socialsupport networks, building coalitions and fostering grassroots leadership.
  • Maintain familiarity with services and programs in the community, and share this information organizationally as appropriate. Develop and maintain informational resources for the Centre and informational/ educational displays on selected health topics as required.
Project Management
  • Develop community-based projects in conjunction with other staff that are responsive to needs, and in accordance with the strategic directions of the Centre, using a project management approach.
  • Generate a process of stakeholder ownership, including community agencies, clients/ participants and community members, in the planning, delivery and evaluation of projects based on our values of interdisciplinary teams and collaborative approaches.
  • Lead the Implementation of projects by:
  • Participating in budget development and managing project activities as required
  • Overseeing effective delivery of project activities
  • Using a shared leadership, team-based approach, provide guidance and direction to students, volunteers, peers, health ambassadors and project-related staff to achieve identified project or program outcomes
  • Evaluate programs to ensure that objectives are met and recommend changes to the day to day running of the projects, based on community input or other relevant sources of information.
Research, Advocacy and Social Action
  • Initiate, carry out, participate in or monitor research or other sources of evidence (e.g. community health needs assessments) on health and social determinants of health needs involving and mobilizing the community of interest around the evidence, and from the research, develop clear plans and positions upon which the Centre should base program and advocacy efforts. This should include identifying the Centre's appropriate level of engagement (support, collaborate, or lead) depending on factors such as the level of priority of the health/social issue for the community, which efforts are already being led by other groups/partners, etc.
  • Initiate appropriate links with educational and other institutions to promote the availability of the Centre as a learning site. For example, developing initiatives in collaboration with the University of Toronto, Department of Health Sciences or the Joint Centre of Excellence for Research on Immigration and Settlement – Toronto.
Administration
  • Participate in Centre and Board committees, work groups, projects, and chair and or take minutes at such meetings as may be required.
  • Identify the need for or participate in the development of policies and protocols, and follow all protocols and policies of the Centre.
  • Develop an annual workplan in conjunction with your supervisor, identifying actions plans, learning goals and professional development needs.
  • Submit program statistics and reports on a timely basis.
  • Participate in the development of funding proposals.Contribute to the vision, mission, values, principles and strategic directions of the Centre.
    • Carry out other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Health Sciences, Social Work, Education or a combination of relevant education and work experience;
  • Minimum 3 years front-line experience in community-based program planning, implementation and evaluation;
  • Thorough understanding of health promotion and community development principles;
  • Ability to speak and write fluently in a language of one of the priority groups of the Centre or other than English;
  • Experience working with 2SLGBTQI+ newcomers/immigrants and a resound understanding of the challenges facing 2SLGBTQI+ newcomers;
  • Experience working with multi-racial, multi-lingual communities and teams;
  • Success in partnership development and funding proposal writing;
  • Experience managing project budgets;
  • Prior involvement in community-based research;
  • Experience supervising/ mentoring staff, students or volunteers;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with colleagues and community members;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with individuals and groups;
  • Commitment to working with low income, multi-lingual and multi-racial communities;
  • Demonstrated computer literacy and keyboarding skills;
  • Demonstrated flexibility and responsiveness to community needs;

Duration: 12 Months with possibility of extension

Hours: 35 hours/week
