The Community Safety Office at the University of Toronto is a tri-campus Equity Office that is mandated to provide support to University students, staff, and faculty that are dealing with issues that relate to personal safety. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, Community Safety Office, the incumbent is required to provide services to the Faculty of Arts & Science (FAS) community relating to personal safety and the development and implementation of safety programs, including the following principal responsibilities: case management, consultation, crisis response, and educational/outreach initiatives.
The Case Manager, Community Safety & Divisional Support is expected to exercise excellent judgment and professional discretion in all matters, consulting with the appropriate individuals as needed. The incumbent provides expert advice and intervenes with clients in circumstances where there is no access to additional help or expert resources. The incumbent is expected to make judicious and effective decisions within a very tight time frame; advising the Assistant Director, Community Safety Office and the Director, High Risk, Faculty Support and Mental Health or senior administrators who are handling critical incidents and managing risk on pertinent issues arising from casework and particular clients.
The incumbent is responsible for creating case management plans for safety issues that require a coordinated response, ensuring the Faculty manages and responds to cases in keeping with appropriate policies and procedures. They must be familiar with the University of Toronto Code of Student Conduct, Sexual Violence Policy, Human Resources Guideline on Civil Conduct, the Guideline for Employees on Concerns and Complaints Regarding Prohibited Discrimination and Discriminatory Harassment, and the University of Toronto Workplace Violence Program.
The incumbent reports to the Community Safety Office on case management and clinical issues and collaborates with the Office of Safety and High Risk on critical matters requiring central case management. The incumbent also has a dual reporting relationship with the FAS's Office of High Risk, Faculty Support & Mental Health who is the primary point of contact in managing issues and crisis that occur within the faculty or affect the UofT Arts & Science community, providing information to the Dean on issues and incidents that occur in the division ensuring that relevant services are deployed, and appropriate actions and follow-ups are undertaken. The incumbent works collaboratively with the offices of Campus Safety, Human Resources, Labour Relations, Equity Offices, Accessibility Services, Environmental Health and Safety, Office of the Vice Provost Students, Dean, School of Graduate Studies, and other central University offices as needed as well as the senior leadership in the academic and administrative units.
Graduate level University degree in social work, psychology, criminology or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Working knowledge of community resources for victims of violence, sound knowledge of domestic, family, andworkplace violence, trauma, mental health and disabilities, and criminal issues; knowledge of the evolutionary process of violence and threat risk assessment models. Working knowledge of the criminal justice system and family court process, knowledge of adult learning principles andknowledge of best practices related to addressing personal safety issues.
Applied Suicide Interventi on Skills Training (ASIST) would be an asset.
Minimum 7 years related experience with a combination of providing counselling, (specifically trauma/crisis counselling), mediation, crisis intervention, community development projects related to violence prevention/education and participation in the development of training workshops and public education.
Experience working with university-aged young adults and individuals in crisis. Post-secondary work experience is a definite asset.
Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act; Technical: Skill with standard office computer applications (e.g., Word, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, email, etc.)
Ability to think critically and generate creative solutions to problems.
Strong counselling, mediation, and conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage cases of significant complexity while balancing competing priorities.
identify immediate actions, exercise sound judgment, and execute decisions effectively under stress in emergency situations.
Knowledge of adult learning principals and experience in presenting information to diverse audiences.
Demonstrated commitment to the promotion of equity in the workplace and an ability to work effectively with all constituents in a highly diverse community.
Communicate effectively, have the ability to work with people from diverse cultures and communities, and be able to exercise great flexibility in being able to respond appropriately to individuals with diverse needs.
Demonstrated ability to manage and regulate self-care and the ability to recognize the limits of one’s own scope of practice.
