Paralegal (Bilingual, English/French)


The Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation invites applications for the position of Paralegal with the Protective Services Division. This is a unionized position.

 

PART 1 – POSITION SUMMARY


The Paralegal is responsible for the management of members’ claims at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and/or the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal. The duties of a Paralegal include providing sound advice, guidance and when necessary, representation before the WSIB or before the WSIAT and other administrative tribunals, and the administrative and legal work related to these responsibilities. The position works within the Protective Services Division, and in accordance with the policies of OSSTF/FEESO and applicable legislation.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not listed in order of priority):


1.        Conducting merit reviews of WSIB/WCB cases and providing practical advice to the organization.

2.        Conducting legal research and interviewing clients and witnesses.

3.        Preparing written briefs and submissions.

4.        Preparing for and conducting appeal hearings before the WSIB, WSIAT.

5.        Analyzing and organizing research and information.

6.        Scheduling and coordination of meetings.

7.        Organizing and maintaining legal files.

8.        Ensures compliance with provincial and OSSTF/FEESO occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures.

9.        Ensures confidentiality is maintained in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act or other related applicable legislation.

10.     Attends meetings during and after business hours as required.

11.     Performs other duties as assigned.


PART II – POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

·               Minimum of two (2) year College Diploma in Law.

·               Minimum one (1) year recent verifiable experience working as a Paralegal

·               Legal research skills

·               An understanding of medical terminology and human rights legislation

·               Maintain a valid P1 Paralegal License.

·               Bilingualism (French/ English) is required.

·               Proficient word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database application skills.

·               Ability to work under pressure within strict deadlines.

·               Organizational skills to maintain numerous files

·               Excellent interpersonal and public relation skills are required involving common sense, tact, courtesy, and integrity, both in person and by telephone.

·               Communication skills for advocating for and relaying information to clients, and when interviewing clients and witnesses.

·               Requires close attention to details and accuracy.

·               Understanding of and commitment to confidentiality


SALARY, BENEFITS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

·        In accordance with the COPE 343 Collective Agreement, the weekly starting salary for a Paralegal is $1,288.

·        Please refer to the collective agreement for working conditions and benefits.

·        May be required to work outside of business hours on occasion, as needed.
