Job Summary
We seek two people with a good understanding of the landscape of clinical research, and the administration that overlays it, as well as experience working with commercial partners in clinical trials. The successful applicants will work in a team environment where interpersonal respect, and being supportive and accountable are core collective values, as we work and learn together. The jobs will entail administrative tasks undertaken to support research efforts, primarily funding and ethics, and the openly collaborative nature of the group will welcome input into any aspect of MIIPs lab operations.


Organizational Status
These positions report to Dr Dave Liu as head of the MIIPs lab. A cultural feature of the MIIPs lab is our operation through a relatively flat/non-hierarchical structure where we are collectively accountable to, and supported by the entire group.


Work Performed

  • Collaboration with the Principal Investigator and Lab Manager, and other collaborators where appropriate, on administrative processes and funding applications. All work will be performed to deadlines and requires close attention to their individual and team member contributions in that context.
  • Preparation, composition, editing and proofing of documents and forms for grant applications. Interaction with funding agencies directly, and with their documentation, to clarify and meet specific requirements.
  • Preparation, composition, editing and proofing of contracts for research projects with commercial partners. Liaising directly with commercial partners during the drafting process for these contracts.
  • Preparation, composition, editing and proofing of ethics applications for clinical trials and research involving human or animal subjects.
  • Contribution in meetings to define strategy, goals, methodologies, and scope of research projects.
  • Input into strategy for recruiting study participants, and contributing content for inclusion in surveys for clinical trials.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The consequences of error in these roles will negatively affect the ability of the MIIPs lab to perform research and may delay implementation of desired improvements to patient healthcare. Owing to the material significance of this, we typically maintain a collaborative approach to administering and authoring funding applications and commercial contracts to minimize errors manifesting in final submissions. Within the bounds of our shared purpose (our work being in the interests of all people, particularly people in BC), we maintain an atmosphere of support in understanding our errors, and accepting diverse perspectives. This is required to facilitate the learning and understanding to which we aspire. Fundamental disharmony on these values and/or disinterest in learning and accountability will be considered significant problems, bringing into question the capability to perform the required work.

Supervision Received
These positions will work with Dr Dave Liu setting goals and determining direction, and with general coordination of the MIIPs lab manager. In general though, supervision will be mutual with the team of peers who work together on lab funding and administration tasks.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the UBC and/or VCHRI research administration ecosystems would be valuable, as would more extensive experience with larger research contracts or grant funding schemes.
  • Familiarity with institutional processes for ethics approvals and funding applications is required as the bulk of the work will involve tasks related to this.
  • Experience in laborious bureaucracies will have utility also.
