Job Summary

The Research Technician will manage all facets of daily operations, experiments, maintenance, and finances of a research laboratory.

Emphasis for this position is to maintain general lab operations for the research group and also to carry out molecular and cellular experiments as part of an active research project.

The individual will be joining a dedicated and highly motivated team of bioengineers, molecular biologists and immunologists. The work and environment are interdisciplinary, with the research focused on development of clinically translational RNA vaccines and therapies.

Organizational Status

The Research Technician will assist the Principal Investigator in all parts of their research program.

The individual will interact closely with members of the research group including graduate and undergraduate students; UBC and department staff and administrators; funding agency administrators on matters of progress and finance reports; and scientific sales managers.

The lab technician position is fundamental to the ongoing success of the lab.

Work Performed

Technical duties

  • Designs and clones new plasmids and synthesizes RNA
  • Plans, designs and conducts standard molecular and cell biology experiments on mammalian cells
  • Coordinates and supports tissue culture of skin explants
  • Performs in vivo vaccine studies and imaging of protein expression
  • Develops novel techniques and methodologies to achieve research goals
  • Assists lab members in troubleshooting experiments
  • Analyses and compiles data in report preparation, presents results, and participates in the preparation of scientific manuscripts
  • Oversees maintenance of all equipment in the laboratory, which includes maintaining contracts with equipment manufacturers, and coordinating repairs with vendors and suppliers
  • Ships hazardous and nonhazardous reagents in accordance with TDG regulations
Lab Operations duties

  • Identifies and implements strategies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of research laboratories. Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the lab
  • Maintains a clean and fully functional lab environment
  • Responsible for training and onboarding of lab personnel
  • Orders laboratory supplies and equipment, including coordination of bid and tendering process with Finance Procurement for larger equipment
  • Maintains complete and accurate financial records related to ordering of materials and supplies for all research grants and prepares financial progress reports for funding agencies as needed
  • Coordinates weekly meetings for research team
  • Facilitates appointments and reappointments for staff and students with department HR representative and provides feedback on staff performance for hiring and retaining decisions
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Exercises a considerable amount of judgement, responsibility, and initiative related to the functioning of the lab.

Incompetence or incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel.

Poor judgment would result in loss of experimental data and delay in conducting research.

Work will be discussed with the Principal Investigator in weekly meetings or as needed.

The successful applicant will be responsible for errors in their work, for reporting problems and mistakes in a timely way, and for correcting those errors.

Supervision Received

Reports directly to the Principal Investigator to ensure priorities are addressed.

Works under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions only on unusual problems or on matters which depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

Supervision Given

The Research Technician will work as part of a team. They may have joint responsibility for supporting and training more junior personnel and graduate students.
