Job Summary

The Research Manager is responsible for all daily management of the Marra lab, including all research projects and strategic direction of the single cell research program in close collaboration with the Principal Investigator. The Research Manager will hire, manage, train and indirectly supervise research personnel including staff and students. They will develop and implement research projects plans, coordinate of sample management, oversee the facilities and infrastructure ensuring compliance with Research Ethics Boards and other safety regulatory agencies. Responsibilities also include developing and managing budgets, preparing reports, and ensuring effective communication flow between collaborators, and the various multi-national co-investigators to ensure the goals of the Marra lab are met.

Organizational Status

The Research Manager reports to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Marco Marra, and works closely with lab members. Frequently liaises with staff at UBC central agencies (ORS, Finance), Genome Science Centre, BC Cancer, co-investigators in Canada, industry partners, and funding agencies.

Work Performed- Develops and implements strategic plans for the lab in collaboration with Principal Investigator.- Leads complex research studies and collaborations between different project teams, including logistics, laboratory analysis, data processing and interpretation.-
- Responsible for the daily operations of the research laboratory including maintain laboratory infrastructure supply management, develop and implement policies and procedures, provide training, maintain ethical and safety certifications.- Prepares interim and final financial and progress reports for submission to funding agencies.- Hires and trains new personnel, including conducting interviews, performance review, and facilitates appointments and reappointments with department.- Oversees research and conducts analyses, working with the scientific teams to develop data collection strategies.- Trains graduate students, post doctoral fellows and visiting scientists that relate to area of technical expertise, providing training and guidance to the interpretation and analysis of research.- Acts as the point person in liaising and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, as well as a consultant to external research facilities.- Performs other duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Consequences of a failure to exercise excellent judgement can include damage to large capital investments in technology owned by the university, as well as failure of scientific experiments and loss of scientific data.

Exercises excellent judgement, responsibility and initiative in performing financial and administrative tasks. Inappropriate judgment could hinder the research program from achieving its deliverables resulting in the termination of funding, could damage relationships with collaborating academic research teams, industry partners/stakeholders, and could negatively impact the reputation of the Principal Investigator and UBC.

Supervision Received

Reports to the Principal Investigator. Works under general direction within established policies, procedures and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards. Must be able to work in a self-sufficient and accountable manner, with an independent ability to use in-depth knowledge to ensure excellence and provide team leadership and motivation towards a common goal.
