The Mitchell Art Gallery (MAG) at MacEwan University is offering current students the opportunity to apply their education and skills in the workplace through the Young Canada Works (YCW) in Heritage Organizations internship program administered by the Canadian Museums Association on behalf of the Government of Canada. This 14-week internship opportunity starts on May 27, 2024, and ends on or before August 30, 2024. 

The MAG is looking for a highly self-motivated current student with an eye for detail, a strong interest in contemporary arts and passion for arts and culture to be our Art Collection Assistant. 

The Art Collection Assistant will provide critical support in:

Assisting with regular collection management tasks such as inventory and condition reporting and help with special projects such as collection photography. They will also take part in developing the Mitchell Art Gallery’s information management systems and interpretive programming related to the Fine Art Collection. Providing daily administrative support for collections management and archival work, conducting necessary research, as well as participating in the planning, coordination, promotion, and execution of the gallery’s future exhibitions and public programming. 

Skills 

Applicants should have the following:

Demonstrated interest in gallery administration, collection management, and community engagement. Excellent verbal and written communication. Strong organizational skills, time management, and creative problem-solving. Strong interpersonal skills to engage with colleagues and outside stakeholders. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, and G Suite. Self-motivated worker comfortable working independently and collaboratively. Skill working with hand tools and ability to perform light manual labour.

Qualifications 

Post-secondary coursework with a focus on fine arts, art history, art education, gallery administration, or related field.

are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible); are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number); are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; a high school, college, CEGEP or university student; all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-HO eligibility criteria; 

Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
