The Alberta Foundation for the Arts is a public agency and provincial corporation of the Government of Alberta that reports to Alberta’s Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women. It is guided by the objectives found in the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Act, 1991 and its mandate is to support and contribute to the development of the arts in Alberta.

The Art Collections Unitis responsible for managing an extensive provincial art collection featuring work from artists all over the province.

**Role Responsibilities**:
Working in the Art Collections Unit and reporting to the Art Collection Consultant, Placement the Art Placement Technician is responsible for the curatorial and technical aspects of the Legislative Assembly Art Placement Program (LAAPP), including interfacing with clients, processing, prioritizing and responding to program requests, guiding art selections, completing installations, and maintaining a high level of professional standards in all program activities.

The Art Placement Technician directly supports LAAPP clients through the art selection process including the development of curatorial selections and performs preparation activities to ensure art placement requests are properly tracked and fulfilled in a timely manner. Building strategic relationships with key contacts and stakeholders in the Legislative Assembly is necessary in this role. In particular, managing client expectations while maintaining a high degree of professionalism, decorum and tactfulness is required.

The Technician will also provide support to requests from the Government and Non Profit Art Placement Program (GNPAPP) as well as any additional priorities and requests, as required by the Art Collection Consultant - Placement.

**Main Responsibilities**:

- Performs collections management practices including assisting with condition reporting and providing support and advice on art handling.
- Within the context of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) Art Collection, as set out in the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Act, the position provides advice and support to clients accessing the AFA’s other programs.

**Qualifications**:
Post-secondary degree in a related field, Bachelor of Fine Arts preferred.
- Knowledge of past and current Visual Arts trends, issues and artists in the Alberta context especially in relation to evolving discussions on colonialism and equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.
- A valid Class 5 drivers' license (or equivalent), with a Clean Driver's Abstract. Experience driving commercial vehicles, such as cube vans, is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with artwork care and handling practices, including a minimum of 2 years of experience in the mounting, framing, matting, glazing, and packing of fine art for transport.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the transportation and installation of fine art (both 2D and 3D) in both traditional (ex. galleries) and non-traditional (ex. corporate offices) spaces.
- Experience with client interaction and correspondence to determine appropriate artwork selections and locations.
- Thorough knowledge of, and experience in, construction methods and fabrication techniques (wood, metal and plastic).
- Familiarity with the operation of all types of power and hand tools, materials handling equipment including forklift and aerial work platforms, environmental monitoring equipment, and matting, framing, and photographic equipment.
- Complex creative problem-solving ability with agility to shift priorities on short timeframes.
- Demonstrates and maintains a sound knowledge of information sources, both general and specific to visual arts, such as academic papers, government publications, colleagues and Internet sources to facilitate research.
- A sound understanding of policies and procedures of the Alberta Government, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Legislative Assembly of Alberta along with best practices (ex. Canadian Conservation Institute).
