What you will do:

Reporting to the Dean, Indigenous Education and Engagement, while also working closely with Program Planning, Development and Review, and the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the Associate Dean is informed by the college’s mission, vision, principles, and strategic plans, CiCan’s Indigenous Education Protocol (2014), the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action (2015), and Humber’s Strategic Plan. An educator, advocate and mentor, the Associate Dean is consultative and collaborative, facilitating awareness within an environment of teamwork so as to create consistent, open channels of communication in support of educational initiatives that expand and enhance Indigenous programming, methodology, research, practice and delivery. The incumbent works collaboratively to actualize institutional commitments to Indigenous Education, creating opportunities for a breadth of teaching and learning experiences that are integral to the multi-disciplinary learning experience that every Humber student is offered. As a strategic leader within the College, the Associate Dean promotes innovation, long-term planning, and collaborative relationship building to foster culturally safe, accessible, and welcoming learning environments across all levels of the institution.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Encourage a culture that supports innovation and enhances the scope and quality of the college’s commitment to and delivery of Indigenous Education programs and curricula. Support the seamless integration of Indigenous histories, perspectives and knowledge into the institutions’ core teaching and research. Promote Indigenous Education within the college, ensuring goals are considered in academic decision making forums, complement planning, resource allocation, programs, service development, and delivery. Participating in the development and implementation of an Indigenous Education and Engagement Strategic Plan as part of the academic planning process of the college. Develop and effectively manage Indigenous Education portfolio budgets in accordance with college policies, and identify innovative revenue opportunities and solutions to resource challenges. Oversee the development, review, and revision of Indigenous pedagogical guides to enable instructors to effectively integrate Indigenous ways of knowing and being, histories, contemporary experiences, perspectives, and pedagogies into the classroom. In collaboration with the Human Resources department and the Academic Division, and the Dean, Indigenous Education and Engagement, develop strategies to undertake and maintain ongoing recruitment and retention of faculty who have lived experience and expertise in Indigenous cultures, knowledges, educational pedagogies, research methodologies, and/or languages, including aspirational targets and benchmarks. Oversee the development and expansion of the Indigenous Knowledge Gathering, and various other academic initiatives to increase access to resources within each of the Faculties, while also providing increased access to information on Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of across all levels of the institution. Collaborate with local, provincial, national and international Indigenous scholarly, community, departmental, and institutional committees to create opportunities for networking, sharing resources, and communicating best practices.

Qualifications

What you will bring to the role:

Education

An Indigenous Scholar with lived experience and expertise in Indigenous knowledge, epistemologies, methodologies, histories, traditions, and/or languages. M.A. (PhD preferred) in Indigenous Studies, Education, or an aligned field with a minimum of five years of experience in a post-secondary educational environment in support of Indigenous education, student success and/or community engagement (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).

Experience

Excellent relationship-building skills with an ability to facilitate consciousness-raising within an environment of teamwork to inspire, motivate, support and empower others through authentic listening, engagement and humility. Along with in-depth knowledge of the post-secondary environment, the ideal candidate will bring outstanding communication skills and strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Possess the courage to support innovative thinking, view tactical problems or initiatives from a broad perspective, and operationalize a strategic plan. Experience building collaborative relationships between Indigenous communities and institutions. Knowledge of the Truth & Reconciliation recommendations as well as relevant Federal and Provincial reports, programs and grant opportunities that impact the post-secondary sector Project management experience with demonstrated analytical and organizational skills to be able to manage multiple projects in an effective and timely manner Excellent leadership, teambuilding, interpersonal, organizational, and management skills including demonstrated ability to work collegially in a unionized environment. Communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills in order to build and cultivate relationships with a variety of stakeholders and manage difficult situations with diplomacy and tact. Flexibility and the ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously, as well as demonstrated creative problem-solving skills. Teaching experience, including experience with curriculum review, development and design considered an asset.
