Ottawa News Editor – Full-Time
Location: Ottawa
We are looking for a dynamic and self-motivated individual who wants to take a leadership role in setting the agenda as news editor in our esteemed parliamentary bureau. Working closely with the Ottawa bureau chief, the successful candidate will help lead a staff of strong and uncompromising multimedia journalists who have a shared goal of providing the public and our clients with the best political coverage in the country. The Ottawa news editor works closely with other CP bureaus, as well as with staff and supervisors at La Presse Canadienne.
Responsibilities:
Help co-ordinate coverage of the daily news report in Ottawa in consultation with the bureau chief, making sure we’re on top of the right stories and effectively using reporters to cover both breaking stories and longer-term assignments and features. Help assign staff to coverage of events, features and enterprise stories with clear expectations on what is expected in the finished product. Help develop story ideas with reporters and the bureau chief with a particular emphasis on exclusive news developments and enterprise work. Co-ordinate all elements of our coverage including video, multimedia and broadcast needs. Liaise with key clients on daily coverage plans while also planning ahead for coverage of major events, such as elections, budgets and international summits. Edit major stories each day. Work with the bureau chief to compile weekly work schedules for all staff. Enforce strict deadlines and encourage a workplace culture rooted in the priorities of a real-time newsroom, including accuracy, speed and exceptional writing. Oversee and be responsible for an efficient, constant triage of news releases, debate and political developments so that our resources are targeted at the most important news of the day.Skills and experience required:
Exceptional copy editing skills and command of grammar and CP style. Have strong decision-making skills and excellent news judgment. Have a deep understanding of politics, political procedure and an eye for spin. Work with staff and clients in a constructive and collaborative way and foster a respectful, collegial workplace culture. Be open to change and be unafraid of trying new ways of storytelling that meet the always evolving multimedia demands of our clients. Encourage staff to experiment in their storytelling, while also helping reporter-editors develop stronger multimedia skills. Demonstrate an ability to help take the reins whenever major news breaks across the region. Be calm and operate well under tight deadline pressure. Have good organizational skills, particularly when it comes to looking ahead at events that need extra planning to achieve the right goals for our coverage. Help find fresh story ideas and embrace the use of social media in CP’s reporting and storytelling. Responsabilités :
Aider à la coordination des reportages de l’actualité quotidienne à Ottawa en consultation avec la cheffe de bureau, s’assurant que nous couvrons les nouvelles importantes et que nous affectons de manière efficace nos reporters pour rendre compte des actualités de dernière heure et aborder des dossiers à plus long terme. Aider à l’affectation du personnel pour la couverture d’événements et de grands dossiers en indiquant clairement ce qu’on a attend du produit fini. Aider à formuler des idées de reportage avec les reporters et la cheffe de bureau en privilégiant particulièrement l’exclusivité des nouvelles et le travail de recherche. Coordonner tous les éléments de nos reportages, incluant les besoins en vidéo, multimédia et radio. Assurer la liaison avec les clients importants pour la planification quotidienne, tout en prévoyant la couverture à long terme d’événements majeurs, tels que les élections, les budgets et les sommets internationaux. Réviser les nouvelles importantes du jour. Travailler avec la cheffe de bureau pour établir les horaires hebdomadaires de travail de tout le personnel. Assurer le strict respect des délais et encourager une culture de travail basée sur les priorités de la couverture de l’actualité en temps réel, en insistant sur l’exactitude, la rapidité et la qualité de rédaction. Superviser et assumer la responsabilité d’un triage efficace et constant des communiqués, débats et activités politiques de manière à déterminer les nouvelles les plus importantes de la journée.Compétences et expérience nécessaires :
Compétences exceptionnelles en matière de révision de la copie et maîtrise de la grammaire et du style de la PC. Avoir un excellent jugement journalistique et de solides aptitudes à prendre des décisions. Avoir une compréhension approfondie de la politique et de ses procédures, et savoir reconnaître la manipulation. Travailler de façon constructive et en collaboration avec le personnel et la clientèle. Être ouvert aux changements et ne pas craindre d’essayer de nouvelles formules de reportage qui répondent à l’évolution toujours croissante des demandes multimédias des clients. Encourager le personnel à tenter des expériences dans leurs reportages, tout en aidant les reporters-rédacteurs à développer leurs compétences dans le multimédia. Démontrer un empressement à prendre les commandes dès qu’une nouvelle d’importance survient dans la région. Savoir garder son calme et bien fonctionner sous la pression de délais serrés. Posséder de bonnes aptitudes organisationnelles, particulièrement pour prévoir les événements qui demandent davantage de planification pour atteindre nos objectifs de couverture. Aider à trouver de nouvelles idées de reportage et savoir utiliser les réseaux sociaux au service de la pratique du journalisme à la PC. Savoir composer avec plusieurs exigences divergentes aux heures de tombée.
