Description of Role
Based in Ottawa, the successful candidate will join an esteemed group of multimedia journalists in our parliamentary bureau to report and edit breaking news stories on federal politics and policy. This journalist will have a passion for politics, solid news judgment and possess strong multimedia storytelling and exceptional copy editing skills. The successful candidate will develop strong expertise in a beat to break exclusive stories, lead the pack and gain a comprehensive network of trusted sources. The reporter-editor will be a team player who joins the bureau in its shared goal of providing the public and our clients with the best political coverage in the country.
Responsibilities:
· Write, edit and gather compelling and original multimedia content for CP’s various services (print, broadcast and video)
· Report breaking news using all platforms including social media
· Research and seek out key contacts in order to develop a strong pool of reliable sources and develop a beat expertise
· Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, share sources and divide workload
· Support other bureaus in handling coverage of federal politics
· Distil large amounts of information to determine key and important information under time constraints
· This position is for a 12 to 8 shift Monday-Friday, which requires reporting and copy editing
· Occasional travel and weekend shifts are required
Skills and Experience Required:
· At least three years of solid experience in a real-time, digital newsroom
· Excellent knowledge and demonstrated professional experience using different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong command of English grammar rules and CP style.
· Ability to work in an intense working environment with a high degree of public scrutiny
· Ability to work under tight deadline pressures
· Ability to edit and improve colleagues’ work on short notice, including fact-checking skills
· Ability to make contacts and develop relationships within senior levels of civil service, cabinet and political parties
· Ability to disseminate complex information to a general audience
· Proven ability to write with flair
· Ability to work both independently and within a team
· Proven ability to use social media as an effective newsgathering tool
· Self-starter who can take initiative and develop story ideas independently
· Ability to travel on short notice on an infrequent basis
Skills and Experience Desired:
· Verbal and written communication skills in French
· Verbal and written communication skills in a language other than English or French
· Strong background in political journalism

Cette personne sera passionnée de politique, sera dotée d’un solide jugement journalistique et détiendra d’excellentes aptitudes pour le reportage multimédia ainsi que des compétences exceptionnelles pour la révision de la copie. Elle développera une solide expertise dans une spécialité pour obtenir des exclusivités, être à l’avant-garde de l’actualité et se bâtir un réseau complet de sources fiables. Elle aura l’esprit d’équipe et se joindra au bureau pour partager l’objectif commun d’offrir au public et à nos clients la meilleure couverture politique au pays.
Responsabilités :
· Rédige, révise et rassemble du contenu multimédia pour les divers services de la PC (écrit, radio et vidéo)
· Publie des nouvelles de dernière heure en utilisant toutes les plateformes, y compris les réseaux sociaux
· Recherche et établit des contacts privilégiés et des sources fiables et développe une solide expertise dans un domaine spécifique
· Collabore avec les collègues pour traiter et publier des nouvelles, partager des sources et diviser la tâche de travail
· Appuie les autres bureaux dans le traitement de la politique fédérale
· Distille de grandes quantités d’information pour déterminer les informations importantes et essentielles dans des délais serrés
· Le quart de travail de ce poste débute à midi et se termine à 20h, du lundi au vendredi, et comporte des tâches de reportage et de révision.
· Déplacements et quarts de travail le week-end occasionnels
Compétences et expérience nécessaires :
· Au moins trois ans de solide expérience dans une salle de rédaction numérique de temps réel
· Excellente connaissance et expérience professionnelle avérée de l’utilisation des différentes plateformes, incluant la radio, la vidéo et le multimédia
· Excellentes aptitudes de communication écrite et verbale, incluant une parfaite maîtrise des règles de la grammaire anglaise et du style de la PC
· Habileté à œuvrer dans un environnement de travail intense avec un fort niveau d’examen du public
· Habileté à travailler sous la pression extrême de délais serrés
· Habileté à réviser et à améliorer le travail d’un collègue à court préavis, incluant la vérification des faits
· Habileté à se faire des contacts et à entretenir des relations avec des membres importants de la fonction publique, des cabinets ministériels et des partis politiques
· Habileté à diffuser de l’information complexe à l’intention du grand public
· Capacité avérée d’écrire avec style
· Habileté à travailler autant de façon indépendante qu’en équipe
· Habileté avérée à utiliser les réseaux sociaux pour recueillir efficacement de l’information
· Débrouillardise et esprit d’initiative pour avancer des idées originales de reportage
· Habileté à voyager à court préavis, peu fréquemment
Compétences et expérience souhaitées :
· Aptitude à communiquer oralement et par écrit en français
· Aptitude à communiquer oralement et par écrit dans une autre langue que le français ou l’anglais
· Solide expérience en journalisme politique
