About the Werklund School of Agriculture Technology

The Werklund School of Agriculture Technology’s (WSAT) vision is to be a globally recognized school of knowledge and innovation, focused on technology, hands-on skills development, applied research, industry and international collaboration initiatives. Through design-based learning, students are encouraged to look at the challenges facing industry and come up with collective solutions through the use of technology. A variety of certificates, diplomas, applied degrees and post-diploma certificates are offered in agriculture, agriculture technology, and land and environment. The WSAT focuses on four key areas: land and environmental resources; agriculture and technological systems; agricultural communications; and social, physical and economic sustainability. 

The Opportunity - Contract Communications Instructor - various programs

An Instructor teaches in discipline areas in which he/she has specific training and competence. Instructors are responsible for the planning, preparation, and delivery of instruction and evaluation of learners. This position includes administrative duties, liaising with community, government and industry representatives and working with other College departments, as required. 

Key Job Functions:

Plan and prepare for instruction, including program development

Delivery of instruction, addressing various learning styles and needs

Evaluate and report on student progress

Work with other College departments to facilitate learner success (for example, accommodations).

Create a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation

Be accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods of time for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success

Liaison with industry, government and community representative, as required

Monitor classroom supplies and tools inventory

Perform various tasks to support student success:

First point of contact for student concerns

Monitor student performance and behaviour.

Submit reports and forms as required

Maintain confidentiality and security of student information

Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate

Perform other activities related to instructional assignment, coordinate activities within a program or programs; and participate in College development

Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:

An undergraduate degree in the field of communications and/or English is required with a preference given to those with a Master's degree. 

Demonstrated ability to engage learners by relating the field of communications to the industry in the learners' program of study is essential. 

Recent experience in teaching in the area of writing proficiency and communications is desired.

Engaging interpersonal and communication skills.

Able to deal professionally with students and staff. In particular, you must be able to effectively work with students to facilitate and assess their learning with inclusive teaching practices.

Organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks at once.

Demonstrate a strong dedication to promoting inclusivity and diversity. This includes actively seeking out and valuing diverse perspectives, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals of all backgrounds, and continuously striving to create a culture of respect and understanding. Foster a proactive approach to promoting equity and embracing differences, both within their role and in the broader community.

A thorough understanding of diverse learner needs, academic, and cultural backgrounds of students.

Comfortable with technology and the use of relevant software and learning management systems. 

Commitment to inspire learner motivation and achievement.

Experience with International Students would be an asset.

Course Descriptions

COM1020- Workplace Communication- In this course students develop writing and presentation skills. Students will apply rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation and mechanics in the development of letters, email and short reports as well as other documents relevant to their industry. Students will demonstrate strategies and techniques for creating informative and persuasive presentations.

COM 1030- Workplace Professionalism- This course uses curricular experiential education to provide students with strategies and techniques for successfully targeting and obtaining a workplace experience, which could include a field study, entrepreneurship, community service, or other approved Work Integrated Learning category. Students will acquire skills such as interpersonal and intrapersonal communication, development of career documents, networking, self-reflection and evaluation, ethical decision-making, and effective electronic media use.
