The program

The Oncology/Hematology/BMT program has recently moved to the new Teck Acute Centre, at the Oak Street Campus of the BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Care Centre. The new inpatient unit features 27 single-patient rooms. The new outpatient unit features 23 single-patient rooms. The program sees 140 new oncology patients and 400 new hematology consultations per year, and performs 25 transplants annually. Additionally, the program is a funded member of the Children’s Oncology Group and has a highly productive research program with over 3 million dollars of grant funding per year.

Role Summary

The Associate Physician practices under the direction and supervision of an attending pediatric hematology/ oncology specialist and works in a structured team-based specialty care setting to increase capacity and service delivery. The AP functions as a member of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at BC Children’s Hospital.

Key Accountabilities

• Makes regular rounds on patients in the inpatient ward with the oncology/hematology Consultants, fellows, residents, nurse practitioners and other health care providers.
• Works with hematology/oncology Consultants, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, physician house staff, and other members of the health care team in the development and delivery of the overall patient care program.
• Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, medication reconciliations as per College and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines.
• Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders in Cerner
• Orders appropriate investigations and follow-up of results
• Arranges consultations with other departments for patient care
• Communicates with families, consultant physicians, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
• Nights and weekends may be included in work week.
• Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence including bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, lumbar puncture and intrathecal chemotherapy.
• Participates in quality improvement projects
• Provides teaching and supervision for medical students and residents
• Attends morbidity and mortality rounds and other QA/QI and educational/research sessions
• Complies with Associate Physician programs CPD reporting requirements

Qualifications

• Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC).

• Successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs).
• Must meet the CPSBC’s English language proficiency requirements. Must be eligible for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class.
• Have Canadian Citizenship, be a permanent resident or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia.
• Must be able to perform within the scope of Associate Physician duties and responsibilities. The applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work within a team. This includes:
o ability to interact effectively and collaboratively
o ability to adapt effectively with other professionals in complex, dynamic situations
o ability to communicate and collaborate with families about health findings, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and follow up
o demonstrated to be an effective communicator and able to build relationships with other health professionals and disciplines using a variety of communication strategies.
• Will be required to document in accordance with CPSBC and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines.
