Course Information

This seminar/studio course will focus on a design exercise/project aiming to develop and apply advanced knowledge of low energy design, exploring passive design, building form, construction technologies, and systems integration. Areas of study may include, net zero energy, natural lighting design, and integration of renewable energy. The use of appropriate methods of appraisal of passive systems and their integration will be considered.

Note: This course is co-taught with one instructor taking the lead in the low energy design process aspects of the studio and a second instructor leading the teaching of energy modeling and supporting students to use energy modeling in the studio project. The two instructors are expected to work in partnership to deliver the learning objectives of the studio. Each position is for 3 hours per week, while students participate for 6 hours a week.

Estimated Number of Students: 20 students

a) A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.


PLEASE NOTE: Pursuant to the University's and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a . Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet. 

Qualifications

Evidence may be requested for all categories.

Education 

Relevant professional degree required (building science, mechanical engineering, architecture, civil engineering). 

Relevant graduate degree (masters or doctoral) is preferred.

Experience

At least five years of relevant industry experience with a particular focus on energy efficient systems in buildings. Some project leadership experience.

Applicants should have at least five years of relevant industry experience with a particular focus on building science and low energy building design. Applicants must demonstrate experience of using and teach energy modeling using tools such as Open Studio or Design Builder.

Applicants must demonstrate experience in applying knowledge of low/zero energy and carbon building design principles and processes, performance analysis tools and building envelope design to building projects.

Applicants must demonstrate evidence of current practice and/or research of low energy/carbon building design and current relevant technologies and standards and the relevance to sustainability and climate change.

Currency

Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and the particular issues related to this course through professional practice, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years). 

Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement.

Teaching Skills

Teaching experience in the area of low energy design is required. Applicants must have demonstrated ability to teach technical and design content effectively within a studio/seminar format. Applicants with experience of teaching at graduate level will be preferred. Applicants must have the ability to guide students and provide counsel as required in order to meet educational/pedagogical goals of the course.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.
