Course Information

In this course students will have an opportunity to explore concepts such as biomimicry, closed loop systems, ecological design processes and prefabrication. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of how to design to minimize the environmental impacts of material and component choices, specifications, and processes. The focus will be on resource efficiency, construction processes, and materials selection. Students will be asked to critically evaluate green building assessment systems and develop an understanding of LCA methods.

Hours/Section: 3 hours

Estimated Number of Students: 25 students

a) A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Pursuant to the University's and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a . Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet. 

Qualifications

Evidence may be requested for all categories.

Education

Applicants must possess an accredited professional degree in architecture or building science, or an advanced degree related to building design, with specialization in sustainable building design. The applicant should demonstrate the relevance of their educational background to the subject matter of this course. Familiarity with current low carbon and circular economy initiatives and trends in Canada is preferred and and a LEED AP credential is preferred.

Applicants with an advanced degree related to sustainable building design may be given preference.

Applicants with degrees in other areas related to the built environment may also be considered.

Experience

Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of sustainable design with at least 5 year’s experience working in industry on sustainable building design and low/zero carbon projects. OAA registration is preferred. 

Note: Applicants without the experience in sustainable practice or teaching experience identified above but possessing a significant record of research, publication and dissemination relevant to sustainable design may be considered for this post.

Currency

Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and the particular issues related to this course through professional practice, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years).

Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement.

Teaching Skills

Applicants should have demonstrated experience in teaching in an Architecture/Architectural Science/Building Science or related program within the past five years. Applicants must have demonstrated ability to teach technical content effectively within a lecture/seminar format. Applicants with experience of teaching at graduate level may be preferred. Applicants must have the ability to guide students and provide counsel as required in order to meet educational/pedagogical goals of the course.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews.

Applicants without teaching experience, but with an exceptional record of practice may be considered for this posting.
