Course Information

Technical and Regulatory Issues. Students carry out design exercises and projects of increasing complexity, and develop skills in architectural representation and presentation. Adding to themes discussed in previous semesters, this studio and its accompanying lecture component considers technical and regulatory issues including The Ontario Building Code and their contribution to the design process, and focuses on the seamless relationship between technical resolution and tectonic expression. Constructability and durability in the Canadian climate is an area of focus.

Semester/Term: Winter 2025

Hours/Section: 9 hours/section

Estimated Number of Students: 15 students

a) A reduced sessional appointment / one semester is for between 9 and 15 hours in any one semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Pursuant to the University's and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a . Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet.

Evidence may be requested for all categories.

Education

Applicants must possess an accredited degree in Architecture (B.Arch., M. Arch. or equivalent).

Applicants with an advanced degree in the field of architecture (design/theory, practice, studio instruction), building science, or management may be given preference.

This studio is team taught, with individual instructors working with a section of about 15-16 students. Applicants should demonstrate the relevance of their educational background to the objectives of this studio. 

Experience 

Applicants should have at least 5-years of experience as a practicing architect engaged in design and documentation work of buildings.

OAA registration (or equivalent in another jurisdiction) is preferred.

Applicants with an exceptional record of related experience relevant to the field of design of the built environment may be considered.

Applicants should articulate the alignment of their experience with the nature of the course/studio

Currency

Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and the particular issues related to this course through professional practice, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years).

Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement.

Teaching Skills

Applicants must have experience teaching in a studio environment in an accredited architecture program. Applicants without teaching experience, but with an exceptional record in practice, may be considered for this position.

Applicants should demonstrate in their applications an understanding of the unique pedagogical issues related to teaching design to undergraduate students.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.

Applicants are to submit samples of teaching work and/or design/creative/professional work or other documents that demonstrate work they have undertaken in the proposed area of focus.
