MLTC was created by nine First Nations located in north-west Saskatchewan who have constitutionally recognized aboriginal rights and Treaty Rights under Treaties #6, #8 and #10. The primary purpose of MLTC is to serve those First Nations in their aspirations for cultural, economic and political autonomy. As a private sector employer engaged primarily in promoting and serving the interests of the member First Nations, MLTC asserts its right to provide preferential treatment to First Nations people, giving them priority in decisions on employment matters such as hiring, and this can extend to measures such as opening competitions only to First Nations people.
This competition is open to all applicants; and Preference will be given to qualified First Nations applicants or other Indigenous applicants who self-declare as being a First Nations person or of other Indigenous ancestry;The MLTC Health & Social Development Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill a full-time permanent position as the Mental Health and Addictions Coordinator. This individual will promote the First Nations Mental Health Continuum Framework and the Continuum of Care of Mental Health and Addictions.
The Mental Health and Addictions Coordinator will work closely with the MLTC Community Wellness program and community-based Mental Health and Addictions Workers to provide interconnectedness of services to enhance the Continuum of Care of Mental Health and Addictions. The Mental Health and Addictions Coordinator provides advice, support, training, and guidance to strengthen community responses to Mental Health and Addictions issues in the eight (8) MLFN communities.
POSITION DUTIES (include but not limited to):
Provide support of the Continuum of Care of Community Development, Prevention and Health Promotion, Early Identification, Brief Intervention, and Aftercare, Secondary Risk Reduction, Active Treatment, Specialized Treatment and Care Facilitation. Research and promotion of Family and Specialized Treatment. Provide support to plan, organize and or develop and facilitated and or implement community based and culturally relevant Education, Prevention, Intervention, and Aftercare programming using a cultural approach and models that will support healing and wellness for individuals, families and communities in addressing mental health and addictions issues. Provide support for best practices of quality, relative-focused, recovery-based and culturally appropriate assessments, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for relatives and their families. Provide support for annual planning to first and second level services of National Addictions Week, Gambling Week and other events. Provide support to community-based workers with EMR and Virtual Care. Referral agent for applications and EMR assessments for Individual, Family, Specialized Treatment Centre as needed.QUALIFICATIONS/ SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Minimum
Mental Health and Addictions Diploma, a related post-secondary Diploma or Degree designation in a related field in Mental Health and Addictions. Designation with the Indigenous Certification Board of Canada, Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation or the Canadian Council of Professional Certification or commitment to complete with 6 months.Preferred
Specialized training or work experience in the First Nations Mental Health Framework and Continuum of Care of Harm Reduction, Detox, Treatment, Specialized Treatment, Aftercare and Second Stage Housing and five-year relevant experience in a preferred in a First Nation community or Indigenous organization. Working knowledge of principals of harm reduction and trauma-informed practices.Other
Participates in team and staff meetings and engages in on-going planning, program development and evaluation. Sound knowledge of current social issues such as poverty, homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, harm reduction, overdose awareness and suicide awareness. Must understand the Indigenous ways of knowing the interconnects with the 4 aspects of life, through the cultural, traditional, and land-based teachings. Ability to build positive relationships with relatives, internal and external resources, team members and administration. Identify professional development and training needs Excellent communication skills and motivational skills to effectively maintain solution-focused dialogue Ability to promote positive change and independence Ability to work independently and show initiative and creativity Ability to work on highly confidential and sensitive matters with tact and discretion, and to act as an example in these areas for a team. The professional confidence and communication skills to effectively lead a team in engaging with community members Must be addiction free, sober, and intent on living a healthy balanced lifestyle and ability to be a positive role model. Able to work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary team Must be willing and able to travel extensively. Ability to speak Cree and/or Dene will be considered an asset
