The Opportunity: Full-time, permanent, Business Partner, People and Culture
Purpose of Position:
The People and Culture Business Partner is a core role within the People and Culture department at Olds College, providing frontline consultative services to ensure progressive people practices and the development of a sustainable workforce capability in support of the College’s strategic direction . The Business Partner works collaboratively to provide expert advisory support on all aspects of human resource management with a strong focus on building relationships with Schools/Departments, understanding their specific needs and assisting with execution of strategy and objectives. The Business Partner is responsible for providing proactive consultation, recommendations, and services to designated client groups.
The incumbent maintains and applies up-to-date knowledge of the Human Resources industry and best practices relevant to the area of responsibility. The Business Partner will lead efforts to resolve complex employee and labour relations issues in consultation with internal and external partners. The incumbent supports leadership in advancing the academic mission of the College while integrating the people strategy into day to day operations. Reporting to the Manager, People and Culture the Business Partner, People and Culture will work at a strategic level as a highly valued business partner and trusted advisor to the College community. The incumbent will possess a strong foundational skillset in and generalist knowledge of Human Resources.
The incumbent provides strategic advising and consultative services to leaders with respect to all aspects of human resource management including, but not limited to talent acquisition and management, employee and labour relations, organizational effectiveness, change management, performance management, employee experience management, and compensation and benefits.
The main purpose of the role is to provide credible and expert HR advice, apply sound judgment, negotiate boundaries, and manage projects, complex issues and conflicts regarding HR issues impacting academic, operational and support staff. The Business Partner, People and Culture will work with other College stakeholders to design and deliver quality programs and services to support Schools and Departments. This position also provides proactive leadership and guidance to management in maintaining a positive relationship with the Union and Faculty Association. The Business Partner must be able to work at all levels within the HR discipline, strategic, operational and tactical.
Leading special projects on behalf of People and Culture or clients will be important for success. The Business Partner promotes employee engagement initiatives across the College and at the client department level demonstrates strong communication, relationship management and problem-solving skills.
Additional areas of practice such as: diversity and inclusion, well-being and quality of worklife, People and Culture policy and Collective Agreement interpretation and employee disability management and accommodation are also required for the role.

Key Job Functions:
Strategic Leadership
Develop strategic HR goals/plans supporting client’s attainment of business strategies and operational goals including research and learning objectives (i.e. formal comprehensive, strategic plans). Reduce Institutional and School/Department risks associated with potential grievances or disputes by identifying, investigating, proposing and implementing appropriate solutions.Relationship Management
Support senior leadership in providing and interpreting HR information required for vital decision making and budget preparation (i.e. People and Culture standards, ad-hoc reports, succession planning). Lead other functional areas of HR to reflect client needs and understand/implement People and Culture policies, programs and procedures.Customer Service
Lead complex matters such as grievances, terminations, return to work planning and accommodation.Manage and resolve escalated, high profile and complex HR issues.Communicate People and Culture policies, programs and procedures to ensure School/Department understanding and commitment.Manage the delivery of People and Culture services and processes to meet the needs of Schools/Departments and all applicable Service Level agreements.Talent Acquisition
In collaboration with leadership, lead and develop strategic workforce plans that will help Schools/Departments deliver on strategies and expected outcomes. This involves mapping out the Institution’s needs with respect to current and future workforce, skills and knowledge that is or will be needed to meet current and future business needs, taking into consideration size, shape, costs and agility of the organization. Lead full-cycle recruitment and selection activities.Management
Lead, mentor, and coach the Administrator and Operations and Systems Specialist, People and Culture in the development of knowledge, experience and skills in support of HR services, processes, policies and programs (i.e job shadowing, coaching, mentoring, formal learning, on the job experience, etc).Innovation
Measure, monitor and improve upon the provision of HR services, processes, policies and programs to enhance productivity, efficiency, customer service and overall college and School/Department performance (i.e formal surveys, verbal feedback, value-added services).Change Agent
Lead and manage change in support of School/Department and/or Institutional business strategies.Compliance
Provide HR advice, services and support which comply with appropriate legislation, governing policies and procedures and collective agreements.Ensure compliance with the College values, code of conduct and FOIP.Environmental health and safety:
Ensure compliance with all work conducted is in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety policy, procedures and legislation.Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
A diploma or degree in a related field is required. Bachelor Degree in Human Resources is preferred.5 to 7 years of diverse HR Generalist background required with extensive experience or specialization in one or more of the following areas; Diversity & Inclusion, Organizational Effectiveness, Change Management preferred. Experience working in a post-secondary and unionized environment are preferred.An equivalent combination of relevant education, skills and experience will be considered.
