Description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for a Chair and Program Lead (academic and clinical) of Heart Failure and Transplantation with an estimated start date of July .

The successful applicant would join a group of 43 cardiologists at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1, physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than , patients yearly from across Canada.

The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally) and recognized internationally for its research in particular in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI/ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs among others as well as strength in heart failure and structural interventions.

Located at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the facility offers state-of-the-art catheterization and electrophysiology labs, and a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging. The core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds, and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.

The Ottawa Hospital is a bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50, inpatient admissions, , emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. OHRI houses over 2, researchers, publishing more than 2, studies yearly, with hundreds being high impact publications (top 10% or citations) and places 5th overall in Canada for research funding.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science (Maclean’s) and 4th in Canada for citations ( THE rankings). Responsibilities

The successful applicant would lead a group of 4 advanced heart failure doctors, comprising the service at UOHI.

Clinical responsibilities would include providing in-patient ward service and consultations for heart failure patients one week in 5, providing on call service for advanced HF/transplant and LVAD patients one week in 5, participating in advanced HF/transplant and LVAD out-patient clinics at least 1.5 days per week, and the possibility of participation in the echo lab and/or cath lab (right heart catheterization and myocardial biopsy).

Leadership responsibilities would encompass the clinical leadership of all aspects of the program with the goal of leading the program to national and international recognition.

Academic responsibilities would encompass the leadership of all aspects of the programs research, with goal of leading the research program to international recognition within 5 years.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, with FRCPC certification in Cardiology and have completed an advanced HF/transplant fellowship; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.

Candidates must have a strong academic track record, either research or quality improvement. Practice profile will be negotiated based on expected academic and clinical deliverables. Academic appointment ranking will be based on qualifications and experience, however, we are targeting applications from those who qualify for Associate Professor or above.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
