Course Information

This course will provide an advanced understanding of building economics, including business case analysis and feasibility, development pro-forma, techniques for cost evaluation, cost control and value engineering strategies, life-cycle cost evaluation, IRR and ROI calculation, financing tools and total cost of borrowing. Both hard and soft costs will be considered throughout the project lifecycle (design, construction, operations, de-commissioning). In addition to cost, this course will also examine construction scheduling of the thousands, if not millions, of tasks and deliverables to track on a construction project – from materials to staff hours to deadlines. The different suitable construction scheduling technique and tools to meet unique projects will be examined, including Critical Path Method (CPM), Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), Gantt Chart, Line of Balance (LOB), Q Scheduling, Resource Oriented Scheduling, Last Planner System® (LPS).

a) A part-time hourly appointment/ one semester is for less than 9 hours in any one semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Pursuant to the University's and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a . Course delivery in Fall 2024/Winter 2025 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet.

Education

The Applicant must possess an accredited degree in Architecture (B.Arch., M.Arch. or equivalent) or Engineering (B.A.Sc or M.A.Sc); applicants with degrees in other areas related to the planning and construction of the built environment may be considered. Applicants with an advanced degree or post-graduate certification in Business or Project Management may be given preference.

Experience 

Applicants must have a minimum of at least five (5) years field experience in project management in active practice, with particular experience in a leadership role in built projects procured using both traditional (e.g. CCDC) and Alternative Financing and Procurement (e.g. Design-Build-Finance-Maintain) projects in Ontario. Applicants must also be proficient in applying recognized project management principles, as demonstrated by active PMP Certification. 
 

Applicants without the practice experience in design and construction management identified above but possessing a significant record of research, publication and dissemination relevant to project management may be considered for this post.

Currency

Applicants must demonstrate current understanding of the architectural field and the particular issues related to this course through professional practice, publications, and/or participation in relevant conferences (within the past five years).

Current DAS CUPE 1 Lecturers are expected to provide an updated currency report to be considered for contract lecturer positions as per article 17.(h) of the collective agreement.

Teaching Skills

Applicants must have demonstrated post-secondary teaching experience related to and techniques that are commonly used in the practice of procurement and construction project management.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to inclusive teaching and awareness of EDI priorities, including but not limited to demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and incorporating course materials and/or guest lecturers to provide different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews.

Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of personal computers that are relevant to this course, including document creation, file management, internet research, and communications.

Interactive Skills

The MPMBE is an experiential and critical thinking-centered program with case-based and problem-based learning integrated throughout the curriculum. Real-world project data will be available for the course to support role plays to provide applied learning opportunities to students. This would require the instructor to lead role-play activities and draw from active practice experience to provide context for decision-making, conflict resolution, etc.

Other Requirements

Applicants are to submit samples of teaching work and/or design/creative/professional work or other documents that demonstrate work they have undertaken in the proposed area of focus.
