Job Function:

Responsible for the management of insurance and claims functions across Hydro One and its subsidiaries. This role will identify corporate operational exposures to loss and recommend appropriate insurance and risk transfer techniques to eliminate or reduce the impact of loss. Also responsible for managing and settling all insurable claims by and against the company.

 

Specific Accountabilities

The Manager, Risk and Insurance supports the Treasurer and is responsible for the following accountabilities.

  1. Advise senior management of all potential sources of insurable loss.
  2. Manage the organizations risk and insurance department with the following goals:
    1. Protect against financial loss resulting from:
      1. Damage to company property.
      2. Downtime and additional costs from damage to property of the organization and others.
      3. Liabilities for property damage or injury to members of the public
    2. Maintain a proper balance among:
      1. Loss exposure retained.
      2. Risk control expenses.
      3. Claims settlement and adjusting costs.
      4. Insurance premium
      5. Administrative costs
      6. Contractual transfer
    3. Manage and settle insurable claims by and against the company, consistent with the corporate policy and procedures for settling claims.
      1. Support the Treasurer in responding to various special requests from the Board and Audit Committee on Risk and Insurance matters.
      2. Manage constructive relationships with the company’s insurance brokers, adjusters and other service providers.
      3. Support the Treasurer in managing Hydro Ones risk and insurance activities such as procurement of insurance, claims management, Contractual review and approval of claims payments.
      4. Support the Treasurer in insurance and risk management policies and procedures.
      5. Support the Treasurer on risk and insurance matters related to corporate initiatives, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures.

 

  1. Strategy and Planning
  1. Develop an insurance and risk management strategy providing both short- and long-term goals.
  2. Research, evaluate and make recommendations regarding current trends in insurance and claims management.
  3. Review potential acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures and other corporate initiatives to identify significant risk and insurance issues and make recommendations.

 

  1. Risk Transfer through the purchase of insurance.
  1. Identify and analyze potential impact of exposures of loss faced by the corporation.
  2. Recommend risk transfer/financing through the purchase of insurance or through contractual transfer.
  3. Evaluate the adequacy of limits and appropriateness of retentions/deductibles, including recommendations on self-insured programs.
  4. Negotiate insurance policies and service agreements with Key services providers.
  5. Maintain effective process to provide timely and accurate underwriting information to broker/insurers for insured risks.

 

  1. Claims Management
  1. Manage insurance claims and claim litigation processes,
  2. Investigate losses and negotiate settlements on major property/casualty insurance claims. Coordinate with inside/outside counsel as appropriate.
  3. Analyze loss data trends and identify potential cost containment opportunities.
  4. Represent the corporation at mediations, settlement conferences and pre-trials for risk and insurance related actions.

 

  1. Contractual Standard/Insurance Certificates
  1. Establish Insurance standards for various classes of vendor and customer relationships of the company.
  2. Review contract as required to assure compliance with insurance standards. Evaluate exceptions to insurance standards and approve/reject as appropriate.
  3. Establish and maintain effective processes for obtaining insurance certificates from service providers.
  4. Oversee process to issue insurance certificates to third parties as required.
