We are lookingfor a self-motivated and science-minded individual to join our research teamwithin the Forest Reclamation and Reforestation Team at the Centre for BorealResearch (CBR). Our team is focused on the development, execution, andcommunication of applied research projects with the goal of providing industry(forest products sector, oil and gas and mining sectors) with a suite ofstrategies and tools that will better support the development of functionalforest ecosystems. This role will lead a subset of these projects at all stagesincluding conceptualization and proposal development to project execution andtechnical deliverable preparation.
This positionwill be a mix of field work, lab, and desk-based work, requiring a variety ofskills including independent thinking and strong organizational andinterpersonal abilities to work in a fast-paced and busy team setting. Necessarypre-requisites for this role include field experience, extensive writing andcommunication expertise and ability to analyze complex data sets in an Renvironment.
Thesuccessful candidate must be willing to move to Peace River, Alberta for theduration of this position.
Key Responsibilities:
Conducting applied research projects using one or more of thefollowing: Conductliterature reviews. Search, selection,and request of supplies necessary for the project. Manage and respond to project related email. Field,Lab and Greenhouse related experiment design, execution, and data collection(with a large focus on field activities). Supervisionof summer research assistants. Fieldwork in a variety of remote locations and climatic conditions. Planningand coordination of project activities with centre staff, clients, and otherstakeholders. Proposal writing, preparation of technical reports of completedproject for the client, for presentation to agency requesting project, or foruse in further applied or theoretical research activities. Preparation of research extension and communication products:technical notes, white papers, and scientific manuscripts.Skills & Abilities needed for this role:
The idealcandidate will have demonstrated experience in a working environment thatpresents a wide variety of technical and operational challenges. The idealcandidate will have extensive experience with R statistical software and strength in the analysis of complex datasets, use of generalized linear mixed effects models and multivariatetechniques employed in the analysis of plant community data. Knowledge andexperience in fundamental and applied forest ecology is necessary. Demonstrated competence in Microsoft office and ArcGISsoftware. Strong writtenand verbal communication skills through preparation of technical reports, manuscripts,and research proposals. Strong verbalcommunication skills demonstrated through experience in teaching,presentation of findings at conferences as well as previous project workrequiring communication with the broader public. Ability to work independently and lead junior teammembers. Demonstrated experience working in the field; this position requiresextensive outdoor work on uneven terrain and in remote locations. Due to the needs of field work, this position requiresa level of physical capacity (fitness) to safely work in the field, at timescarrying heavy loads (field supplies, < 50 pounds) on uneven terrain. Experience driving 4WD trucks on gravel roads. Training and experience conducting vegetationidentification surveys.Qualifications:
Master’s Degree (PhD preferred) in ecology with focus on nativeplant communities. At least 5 years of related experience. Post-doctoral experience is considered an asset. Experience inexperimental design and execution. Demonstratedtraining and/or use of R software. Class 5 license with clean drivers abstract.Applicants witheducation credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentialsevaluated by World Education Services or the International QualificationsAssessment Service (IQAS).
