Reporting to the Centrally Assigned Principal, under the day-to-day direction of the Site Supervisor, the Outdoor Education Specialist - Unassigned will provide Outdoor Education program delivery, preparation and development for (primarily) elementary (JK – Grade 8) for Day Centres or secondary (Grade 9 - 12) students, under the direction of teaching staff. This includes creating and maintaining program equipment, displays and facilities.
The Outdoor Education Specialist – Unassigned will be placed in a home-based Outdoor Education Centre and assigned to identified Outdoor Education Centres on a temporary basis (as needed) by the Centrally Assigned Principal. When not on assignment the Outdoor Education Centre will return to the home-based location until the next placement is determined.
Summary of Duties:
Ø Provide outdoor education program delivery (e.g., curriculum-based lessons in natural settings such as mapping, snowshoeing, teambuilding, pond study, hiking);
Ø Assist with preparation of outdoor education material (e.g., sugar shacks, displays, team building equipment, maple syrup, seasonal equipment preparation);
Ø Assist with maintenance of resources for program;
Ø Assist with outdoor education lesson preparation (e.g., preparing hands-on materials for students);
Ø Assist with cleanup;
Ø Assist with outdoor education program development (e.g., draft materials);
Ø Provide guidance for outdoor education Interns;
Ø Assist at mealtime (e.g., composting/recycling/garbage, cook-outs) and free time (e.g., safety/location instructions);
Ø Assist with overnight supervision of students, as required;
Ø Perform site specific administrative duties (e.g., inventory, scheduling, communication with teachers/principals, equipment/ clothing/boots); and
Ø Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Ø Two year community college diploma in related field (e.g., Outdoor Education) with one year of related outdoor education experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
Ø Current First Aid and CPR certification;
Ø Proven competency in outdoor and beyond-the-classroom skill areas;
Ø Proven outdoor experience with elementary/intermediate/secondary students
Ø Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills with proven ability to work as a team player;
Ø Working knowledge of related Board policies and procedures;
Ø Background knowledge of outdoor and environmental issues; and
Ø Some sites require specific certification. For example, NLS Lifesaving, Canoeing, Cross-Country Skiing, High Ropes, CanBike, Focus on Forests/Project WILD training courses.
Assets:
Ø Computer skills;
Ø Significant large group facilitation experience
Ø Animal care experience
Ø Prior experience working with curriculum.
Special Requirements:
Ø Must lead and participate in often strenuous outdoor activities such as walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, swimming, and be able to respond to emergency situations while leading such activities.
