Description
Duties and Responsibilities
Study specifications, charts, drawings or sample parts to determine the machining operation to be performed. Calculate dimensions and tolerances, and prepare working sketches if necessary. Measure and mark metal and other materials. Set-up and operate tools, which may be computer numerically controlled, to perform precision machining operations. Fit parts to mechanisms and verify dimensions.Prerequisites
Education
Apprentice Level:
Be eligible for registration as a registered apprentice; or Be a registered apprentice. Motivated and willing to learn.Journeyman Level:
Hold a valid recognized Alberta Journeyperson Trade Certificate, or a recognized trade certificate or equivalency document. Inter-Provincial Red Seal Certificate is preferred.Experience
Apprentice Level
Mechanical aptitude with willingness to learnJourneyman Level
2+ years of directly related work experience. This position may be required to direct, coach, and mentor apprentices.Other

Ability to cut materials using power tools or by hand. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications. Ability to visualize a finished product from a drawing. The ability to use their hands skillfully and quickly. The ability to estimate and measure sizes and distances accurately. The ability to work independently at tasks that require concentration as well as physical effort.Relationships

Interacts with other trades and supervisor for the purpose of providing or receiving routine information in regards to their needs. May be required to perform similar work in various departments while taking direction from other leads/foremen/supervisors.External
Interacts with clients/vendors as requested by immediate supervisor.Authority Level
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Position has latitude to apply judgment in immediate work environment with guidance from established guidelines and standards. Issues of a more complex nature or beyond the scope of the position are referred to the immediate supervisor.Work Environment
Specific Work Conditions
Fabrication shops are frequently noisy, dusty, busy areas with some confined spaces – attention to personal and team safety is required May be required to work outdoors all types of weatherPhysical Requirements
Must be in good physical condition with the physical strength and stamina required to occasionally lift heavy materials in excess of 10 kilograms and stand for long periods Frequent bending and working at heights There is some risk of injury when working with power tools and heavy equipment Employees must adhere to dress code for safety sensitive areas. Company-standard PPE for shops and yards includes CSA approved steel toed boots and full length pants Ability to walk on uneven ground that is expected in yardsPerformance Measures
