ESA is seeking an experienced and effective temporary Training Development Specialist to support our Training Solutions Team and help make Ontario safer.


About the Job

The Training Development Specialist is responsible for researching, developing and maintaining the technical content of ESA’s technical training material, including material for technical courses, safety awareness workshops, Code courses, Inspector training, and safety meeting and conference presentations.

General Accountabilities

Coordinate, administer and engage in the work of supporting the Electrical Safety Authority’s training program. Research, develop, maintain, and recommend revisions and additions to training content and curriculum.


Design and deliver “train-the-trainer” presentations utilizing proven training methods and strategies.


Provide advice, guidance, and instruction to training presenters, including interpreting and applying technical information such as electrical codes, standards, and electrical approvals. Respond to enquiries related to technical content of training material.


Assist the Program Manager, Training to define, develop, and evaluate training opportunities. Ensure the delivery of training products and services meets the quality standards set for the Training program. Identify quality processes and issues and suggest improvements. Actively seek information on new training ideas, strategies and trends that impact electrical safety. Assist the Program Manager, Training to review and evaluate industry trends, products, and services, maintaining ESA’s competitive position.


Develop delivery tools, tactics, procedures and assessment tools for Training program initiatives. Incorporate adult learning principles such as PowerPoint presentations, role-playing and interactive sessions into curriculum content and delivery. Monitor training presenter work practices and procedures, ensuring consistent application.


Assist the Program Manager, Training to identify, develop and administer the tools required to support the training function in delivering training, including continuous process improvements, delivery guidelines, job aids and the like.


Maintain awareness of code and regulation issues, and provide input and recommendations to the Provincial Code Engineer for changes related to training. Discuss matters of concern with the Program Manager, Training, Provincial Code Engineer, and Technical Advisors to contribute to the resolution of applicable technical issues, obtain pertinent information and/or keep abreast of current developments.


Develop effective working relationships with others. Understand the agendas and perspectives of others, recognizing and effectively balancing the interests and needs of the Training program with those of the broader organization. Create an atmosphere where timely and high-quality information flows smoothly between self and others. Encourage the open expression of ideas and opinions from training presenters. Demonstrate leadership and sound business ethics.


Demonstrate a high level of oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Speak clearly and express self well in groups and one-on-one conversations. Convey information clearly and effectively through both formal and informal documents.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

Knowledge of general business practices, adult education principles and learning theories to understand and apply current training programs in a business environment is required.


Requires strong written and oral communication skills, including solid knowledge of appropriate computer applications and computer-aided techniques for the delivery of training programs.


Requires knowledge of English to communicate effectively with others when responding to technical enquiries, consulting with internal and external contacts, and developing and delivering training material.


Requires a broad knowledge of electrical principles and theory to develop technical training material.


Must have a strong knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and an understanding of electrical theory and practice as these apply to the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment, design layout and specifications to develop training material.


This knowledge is typically acquired either by completing a 4-year University education or by having an equivalent level of education.


Requires experience in the electrical construction industry to understand the various issues related to electrical safety training requirements.


Requires a background to support the design, development, delivery and evaluation of technical training initiatives.


Requires knowledge of the service programs of the ESA to understand processes, procedures, and technical and business operations.


Requires computer applications experience, including that associated with adult learning programs and their delivery.


A period of over six years, up to and including eight years, is considered necessary to gain this experience.
