Reporting to the VP, Fund Development, the Senior Manager, Fund Development, Major Gifts will be responsible for revenue generation and execution of the organization’s major giving strategy, primarily with respect to individuals, foundations, corporate giving, cause marketing and partnerships. In addition, the incumbent will work collaboratively with the leader of the Planned Giving portfolio to identify opportunities for growth.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Lead, develop and manage the annual fundraising budget and operating plan for Major Gifts and Partnership portfolios.
  • Alongside the VP, Fund Development analyze trends in major gifts fundraising to identify opportunities and challenges, develop strategies and implement actions to ensure that ALS Canada’s plans reflect the direction and demands of the marketplace and poises itself for growth.
  • Develop reports and presentations to the Board and senior management related to owned portfolios and other subjects of expertise.
  • Participate and lead by example on the Fund Development Team, creating an inclusive collaborative working environment.
  • Provide leadership, oversee training/development, performance evaluation, and employee engagement for direct report - Specialist, Fund Development.
  • Work cross-collaboratively with all departments to ensure the maximization of funds raised and excellent donor experiences and stewardship are deployed.
  • Foster, support and ignite a culture of philanthropy at all levels across the organization.
  • Attend and support Board meetings as required.


Revenue Generation

  • Meet or exceed the overall revenue targets for Major Gifts and Partnership portfolios, as established within the annual operations plan.
  • Build a prospect pipeline and actively cultivate, solicit and steward philanthropic and sponsorship prospects.
  • Build, manage and steward relationships with a portfolio of key donors.
  • Participate in all aspects of the Major Gift cycle: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with Senior Manager, Fund Development, Individual Giving on moves management of key MG donors for Planned Giving.
  • Develop a corporate engagement strategy to advance opportunities.
  • Where appropriate, support the Events Team with sponsorship recruitment and corporate engagement through employee event participation.
  • Prepare effective proposals, grant submissions, and sponsorship packages for varying opportunities across the organization.
  • Identify, set and meet key performance leading and lagging indicators including pipeline statistics, close rates and pledges.
  • Contribute to organizational communications, developing strategic fundraising messaging collectively with both the Fund Development and Marketing Teams.
  • Maintain an up-to-date and deep knowledge of ALS Canada’s work, and projects for discussion with donors, prospects, and other external audiences.


Cultivation & Stewardship

  • Identify, grow and manage a portfolio of individual, family and corporate foundation prospects.
  • Build one-on-one relationships to renew gifts, identify opportunities for alignment and grow support.
  • Develop, monitor and implement a comprehensive and consistent stewardship/recognition plan and strategies across the organization including personalized experiences, donor appreciation events, recognition, and reporting.
  • Cross-collaborate with stakeholders to develop and create annual, general progress/stewardship reports, as well as specific reports to high value and/or restricted donors.
  • Create and evaluate tailored donor benefits, identify unique opportunities to deliver value to partners while ensuring contractual obligations are met for specific Major Gifts initiatives.


Administration

  • Ensure Raiser’s Edge database is kept updated with timely and accurate information on all prospects and current donors including communications, reporting requirements, opportunities, and proposal submissions.
  • Ensure receipting and follow-up communications are adhered to as they relate to the stewardship plan.


Other Duties:

  • Extended hours and weekend work required from time to time.
  • Some travel may be required to attend donor and stakeholder meetings. Attend as an Ambassador and/or speak on behalf of ALS Canada at selected events and/or membership committees.
  • Other duties as required.


What we are looking for:

  • Completion of post-secondary education with 6-8 years related progressive work experience in successful institutional fundraising or partnership development.
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience including successfully closing gifts at the $25,000+ level and leading national and regional fundraising campaigns with revenue targets of $1M+.
  • Experience in pipeline development, prospect review and qualification, proposal development, measurement, report writing, cultivation, and solicitation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to sensitively convey an authentic vision, in particular in proposal and report development and donor presentations.
  • Ability to strategically align donor interests with approved funding priorities/case for support to inspire giving and long-term engagement.
  • Strong project management, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Entrepreneurial, creative, strategic minded, and energetic.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills including effective networking, relationship building, and active listening.
  • Understanding of sector trends as they relate to the Major Gifts environment and corporate social responsibility.
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and ability to liaise with and inspire senior management, leadership volunteers, staff, corporate contacts, and donors.
  • Inherent demonstration of ALS Canada core values: accountability, collaboration, compassion, integrity, resiliency, respect.
  • Proficiency in standard Office software and Raiser’s Edge or other fundraising software, information resources and publications, including fundraising databases and on-line services.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle. Travel throughout the province is occasionally needed.

Preferred Assets

  • Experience in nonprofit sector/health charity.
  • Ability to speak and/or write in French.
  • Certificate in Fundraising Management and/or Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) certification, membership in the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
