To support its growth strategy, Aptyx Trenton is seeking to fill the role of a Lean Manufacturing Engineer at our Trenton location .

Main functions: 

We are looking for an industry experienced individual who will hit the ground running. Reporting to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, as a Lean Manufacturing Engineer, you will play a key role in facilitating the implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles within the organization while closely working with other engineers and the production team to establish a customer-based improvement strategy to drive safety, quality, delivery and cost. This position entails direct interaction with all levels of the organization. It requires a professional capable of navigating the technical world and engaging with the teams to promote changes through constant coaching to spread a lean culture. The successful candidate will be responsible for optimizing our manufacturing processes, reducing waste, and improving overall efficiency while completing the assigned daily engineering activities. Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensure effective functioning of transformation activities aligned to the Lean Operating System for continuous improvement.
  • Lead Continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and reduce waste in process manufacturing, recommending solutions, and partnering with other SME to improve process and output.
  • Leverages best practices to drive continuous improvement and teach lean tools to all levels of the organization (TPM, SMED, Standard Work, Visual Management, SQDC boards, MDI, etc.).  
  • Develop, evaluate, improve, and document manufacturing methods.
  • Establish product cycle times and related costs to provide information to aid in management decisions, such as capacity and productivity. Establish process/product capability and strive for continuous improvement.
  • Complies with health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement cost reduction plans with manufacturing engineering and other teams.
  • Develop, implement, and train manufacturing personnel in lean concepts and lean manufacturing to improve production efficiencies.
  • Support the lean transformation in our production environment by developing standard work to sustain the process improvements.
  • Coach and develop the production team to grow their lean knowledge and execution capabilities. Mentor them to be true agents of change, improving their change management capabilities and ensuring rigor around conducting the kaizen events.
  • Help to foster the lean vision and continuous improvement strategy to advance the customer experience through improved cycle time and on-time delivery and ensure all other customers critical to quality areas are at the forefront of the strategy.
  • Develop, implement, and manage Lean initiatives such as 5Why’s, 5S, kaizen, VSM, JIT, SMED, kanban, A3, visual management, pull processes, process flows and standard work, TPM.
  • Provide training and guidance to production teams on Lean principles and manufacturing processes.
  • Lead and conduct Kaizen and Value Stream Mapping events with employee participation. Lead Lean workouts and deliver training where necessary to evolve and sustain the lean culture across the site.
  • Design and implement automation solutions to enhance manufacturing processes, reduce manual labour, and improve overall productivity.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and standard work to ensure consistent and reliable manufacturing processes.
  • Stay up to date with lean manufacturing and automation best practices, emerging technologies, and industry trends.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for manufacturing challenges.

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering is required from an accredited university or college; P. Eng license is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a lean manufacturing environment, leading teams in a lean transformation
  • Must have 5+ years of experience in a process industry and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Certified Lean Expert with demonstrated working knowledge of lean implementation including but not limited to 5S, OEE, SMED, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Kaizen (Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification is preferred).
  • Ability to foster lean development with a “hands-on” and showing-by-doing approach and understand all types of waste using lean manufacturing tools for daily activities.
  • Experience leading Kaizen events on the plant floor.
  • Ability to work effectively across functions; extensive experience leading cross-functional or geographically dispersed teams; proven mentoring and coaching abilities; ability to motivate and inspire others.
  • Clear thinker, able to analyze and resolve complex problems.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to drive projects to completion, with accountability for cost and schedule.
  • Must demonstrate technical capacity, thoroughness, and good time management skills.
  • Excellent Presentation, Problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Minitab, MS Office tools, and ERP systems an asset.
  • Strong work ethic and initiative – an independent self-starter.

  • This position may require occasional international travel.


Working conditions:

Office and production floor environment, computer and desk work as required. Onsite only. No remote or hybrid work.
