Land Use Planner at any level

Dundas, Canada Nethery Planning Full time

We are rapidly approaching the end of 2024, a time for reflection and thoughts about what joys this season can bring for us. In canvassing the leadership team at Nethery Planning, we learned:

  • One Principal Planner wants a Ninja Creami to make enough ice cream for her and the rest of the team.
  • Another Principal Planner wants an extra room in her house (minor variance required...and if denied, use the funds for a trip to Glasgow instead).
  • And Joe, the company President, wants more planners on his growing team.

If starting the year off fresh in a new situation is on your wish list, be that for the step up you've been seeking or to find a new place where culture is top priority, ours might be a conversation worth having in December.

Company Description

Nethery Planning is an all-inclusive land use planning practice. We're community builders dedicated to laying the cornerstones of thriving neighbourhoods. With a rich history in public practice, our founder set out to demystify the planning process, offering developers and the broader public a transparent path through the complexities of city hall – and municipalities a foundation for better dealings with their public.

Our services include municipal policy and implementation, development application facilitation, engagement and facilitation, municipal day-to-day support, specialized support, and major project management. We strive to deliver exceptional planning solutions that exceed expectations and drive positive change. Read more about us at netheryplanning.ca

Role Description

This is a full-time role for land use planners more established in their career. While intended as a primarily remote position that will transition to hybrid at some point, there will be in-person requirements for client-facing meetings at their locations plus internal corporate meetings (can figure out convenient locations, but the team is headquartered in Hamilton/Dundas and concentrated north and west of Toronto).

The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of land use planning tasks, oriented toward project requirements and aligned to the successful candidate's interests and experience. There are two potential roles available:

  1. For a planner, still new in their career. You will be looking for bigger roles in preparing and presenting reports and recommendations to clients, Councils, and the public. You are likely looking for a little more autonomy at this point in your established career, looking to apply the lessons you have learned in your current work in a growing leaderhip role.
  2. For a more established land use planner, likely looking for a step up or the opportunity to lead or manage (formal supervisory responsibilities) a small team. This would be a matrix responsibility, ensuring the team's Principal Planners have the resources they need to deliver on projects alongside the individual goals and ambitions of more youthful staff who want to grow into more senior roles.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Candidates will be asked for their expectation here.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and mentoring the firm's Planners and Planning Assistants--growth over time will see this transition to a direct reports relationship
  • Implement the firm's business development strategy, and contribute to its update and expansion for 2025
  • File leadership, commensurate with experience
  • Leadership over the production of project deliverables (such as official plan and zoning content, planning justification reports, research reports, or analytics)
  • Oversight of project budgeting and accountability for that performance, commensurate with experience
  • Maintain and elevate the firm's reputation by representing us at industry or professional events

This position targets two types of candidate: somebody fairly senior in their career looking for their skills to be recognized and rewarded, or somebody ready for that next step in terms of project ownership and leadership. Your application will demonstrate fit with our team by recounting your experience in either leading planning projects or teams (or both). Success in this position could take many forms, but critically involves delivering projects on time and within budget (and proactively identifying any issues in meeting those targets), training others on the team to do the same, identifying and securing new clients, and showing kindness at every opportunity.

Qualifications

  • (For the more senior position, a track record of success in project and people leadership, as demonstrated in your cover letter and CV)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills--the most critical component for success in this position
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Ability to interpret and apply land use regulations
  • Experience in developing planning policies and guidelines is an asset
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks is essential
  • Proficiency in using planning software and tools
  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Experience in the planning field in Ontario is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or related field
  • Membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute or Canadian Institute of Planners
