Role Focus: This position is a specialized Human Resources role with a primary focus on Health, Injury, Safety, Recovery, and Occupational practices, aligned with BC K–12 sector standards. The Specialist provides health and recovery coaching, disability and claims coordination with our provider, and Stay-at-Work / Return-to-Work (SAW/RTW) facilitation to support employee wellness, safety, and sustainable attendance. The role supports employees who may be experiencing challenges at work or who are absent due to occupational or non-occupational illness or injury, and works collaboratively with leaders, unions, and external partners to ensure timely, safe, and respectful recovery and reintegration into the workplace. Job Summary: Reporting to the District Principal of Human Resources, the Human Resources Advisor – Wellness, Health & Safety is a key partner within the Delta School District, supporting District priorities related to employee wellbeing, safety, attendance, and recovery. This role provides expert leadership in disability management, WorkSafeBC claims coordination with our provider, and wellness initiatives, while ensuring compliance with legislation, collective agreements, and District policies. The Specialist works collaboratively with District leadership, union representatives, the District Safety and Health Manager, and external providers to promote a healthy, safe, and supportive work environment that enables employees to remain at work or return to work safely and successfully. Key Responsibilities: Health, Wellness, and Recovery Provide health and recovery coaching to employees experiencing workplace challenges or absences related to occupational or non-occupational illness or injury. Coordinate and facilitate Stay-at-Work (SAW) and Return-to-Work (RTW) plans, including the identification and implementation of suitable and medically supported workplace accommodations. Ensure RTW planning is collaborative and occurs in consultation with the Assistant Director, District Principals, supervisors, and union representatives, as appropriate. Maintain regular and supportive contact with employees during recovery to promote engagement, clarity, and successful reintegration. Disability and Leave Management Administer and support District processes related to: Sick Leave Support Short-Term and Long-Term Disability (LTD) Non-occupational illness and injury leaves Liaise with medical practitioners, insurers, and external providers to obtain functional abilities information and coordinate appropriate supports. Identify, arrange, and monitor early intervention and rehabilitation services when required to support timely recovery. WorkSafeBC Claims Management Work closely with our provider that coordinates the WorkSafeBC claims management process, including claim initiation, monitoring, and follow-up. Act as the primary District contact for WorkSafeBC, supporting adjudication, SAW/RTW planning, and claims cost management. Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC requirements, timelines, and documentation standards. Safety and Occupational Health Work collaboratively with the District Safety and Health Manager to support the implementation of occupational health and safety initiatives. Support incident response, injury investigations, and corrective action planning, as required. Promote a culture of safety and prevention through education, consultation, and wellness initiatives. Advisory, Mentorship, and HR Partnership Provide consultation, mentorship, and coaching to school and department leaders on wellness, attendance management, and recovery-focused practices. Serve as a resource to HR colleagues on complex recovery, accommodation, and disability-related cases. Promote respectful, trauma-informed, and inclusive approaches to employee support. Training and Education Develop and deliver training related to: SAW/RTW processes Disability and attendance management Wellness and psychological health and safety WorkSafeBC and occupational health obligations Qualifications A minimum of four (4) years of recent, related experience in human resources, disability management, occupational health, or wellness, supplemented by a university degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, Health Sciences, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience working in a complex, multi-union environment an asset. Experience in the K–12 education or public sector is an asset. Certification as a Certified Human Resources Professional (CPHR) is preferred. Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong working knowledge of: WorkSafeBC legislation and claims management Stay-at-Work / Return-to-Work best practices Disability management and accommodation principles Employment standards, human rights legislation, and collective agreements Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and work effectively with employees, unions, leaders, and external partners. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Demonstrated ability to promote wellness, safety, and recovery-focused practices within a complex organization. Compensation & Benefits Competitive annual salary range: $78,490 – $98,113 based on qualifications and experience.
