COMPENSATION $33.39 per hour - $34.39 per hour (NEE: 15)

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation is seeking a dedicated and hard-working Tenant Wellness Coordinator with experience working with Indigenous communities in Housing related initiatives to join our Operations & Maintenance: Housing Department. PURPOSE: Reporting to the Housing Administrator, the Tenant Wellness Coordinator is responsible for providing direct support to tenants residing in Nation owned housing. The Tenant Wellness Coordinator will provide tenant and administrative support to the Malahat Housing Department and acts as a bridge working collaboratively with tenants and various departments. This is a community facing position and require frequent interaction with the Malahat Nation community. This position is a full time 1-year term position that works in the office with minimal local travel as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the guidance of the Housing Administrator, uphold and enforce the Housing Policy in all tasks and activities; assist and support tenant(s) with interpretation of the Housing Policy by translating the housing policy and expectations into plain, accessible language
  • Provide professional administrative support the Housing Administrator through proactive development and preparation of correspondence, presentations, reports/proposals, type forms, letters, and memos as needed
  • Provide support with applications for renovation supports for registered qualifying houses
  • Provide support to tenants in navigating housing related services including but not limited to financial responsibilities and wrap around supports while maintaining respectful communication between tenants and administration
  • Provide guidance or informal coaching on home care cleanliness, safety, and tenancy rights and responsibilities
  • Provide mentorship to the Housing Intern related to general housing duties and responsibilities
  • Provide support in the assessments of housing related to renovation, health and safety inspections and ensure that housing units are maintained in safe, healthy conditions through education, mentorship and advocacy
  • Provide support with coordinating, scheduling and recording minutes of the Housing Committee
  • Provide support with communication, funding applications, and reporting with relation to housing from various funders including but not limited to ISC, CMHC, United Way, and BC Housing etc.
  • Build and maintain rapport creating respectful relationships with tenants including but not limited to those who are struggling or in crisis
  • Meet tenants where they are at i.e. in their home, in the community or in the office and walk with them through their housing needs while practising patience, cultural humility, and trauma- informed support
  • Incorporate Indigenous ways of being and knowing into everyday work, including listening deeply, walking in good relations, and promoting healing
  • Demonstrated knowledge and respect the impacts of colonialism intergenerational trauma on housing outcomes; where possible, involve local elders, Knowledge Keepers, or traditional practices in tenant support, education, and / or conflict resolution
  • Advocate on behalf of tenants when appropriate while also supporting them in self-advocacy; ensure the tenant voices are heard and reflected in housing related decisions
  • Assist with the planning, coordination and facilitation of a wide range of supportive and empowering housing and tenancy programs that promote wellness, belonging and community i.e. Ready to Rent, Budgeting, and / or Lifeskills etc.
  • Maintain appropriate records management system in accordance with Malahat Nations internal systems and processes and any applicable authorities (funding agencies)
  • Maintain and ensure all rental agreements are up to date and assist with rental payment, arrangements and / or arrears
  • Maintain respectful, accurate documentation of tenant interactions, support plan and follow ups
  • In collaboration with the Operations and Maintenance Department review, assess, and prioritize housing maintenance request forms and organize and assign the related work to be completed including coordination of services performed by contracted service companies as applicable
  • Other duties as required

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma) and / or an acceptable combination of related education, training and experience is required and / or express an interest in Housing Administration, Property Management, or related field required etc.
  • Minimum 1-year experience working in Housing Administration, Property Management, or related field required
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) including vulnerable sector is required
  • Valid BC Driver's License and reliable vehicle required

OTHER EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors Degree and / or Housing Administration, Property Management related diploma and / or certificate is an asset or a combination of experience and willingness to complete training
  • Lifeskills Coach training is preferred
  • Certified courses, training, or workshops completed in Housing Administration, Property Management or Tenancy Rights and / or Housing responsibility related courses is an asset
  • A genuine respect for Indigenous history, cultures and practices with an openness to learning and engaging with Indigenous communities is an asset

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated commitment to community wellness and healing
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people experiencing trauma, addictions, or mental health challenge
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites programs and / or data base management
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving, critical thinking, coaching skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to manage a deadline driven and detail-oriented workload, including an ability to prioritize tasks in context of sensitivity, confidentiality and urgency of requests while balancing other work commitments
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism when dealing with confidential information
