Controller (Maternity Leave Coverage)

Position Overview:
The Controller (Maternity Leave Coverage) is responsible for the preparation and distribution of internal and external financial statements, maintaining the general ledger, and ensuring compliance with ASPE and IFRS (as applicable). This role oversees daily accounting operations, treasury functions, audits, tax compliance, and financial reporting while leading and mentoring the accounting team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations for Accounting, Accounts Payable, Cost Accounting, and Treasury, providing guidance to achieve team objectives.
- Manage the monthly close process, including reconciliations and review of financial statements.
- Maintain the team planner and distribute workload effectively.
- Support the CFO with treasury and cash management functions.
- Assist the CFO with mutual fund trust management, compliance reporting, budgets, and forecasting.
- Review and update the Project List monthly, including mortgage balances, appraisals, and financing recommendations.
- Prepare mortgage requests, coordinate insurance certificates, and support financing activities.
- Oversee rental property financial operations, including rent rolls, tenant payments, NSF balances, and reconciliations.
- Prepare year-end financial statements for mutual trust and Real Estate LP, including NAV calculations and workbooks.
- Prepare GP financial statements and T2 returns.
- Review and oversee tax filings, including T5s, T5018s, and GST returns.
- Coordinate partnership and GP tax audits.
- Manage annual audit and review processes for the mutual fund trust, Real Estate LP, and parent company.
- Prepare monthly management reporting and provide variance analysis compared to budgets.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement, efficiency, and accuracy in reporting.
- Mentor and coach accounting team members.
- Support system conversions, ensuring compliance and adequate documentation.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting.
- CPA designation required.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in financial management.
- Experience in real estate or construction industries preferred.
- Experience with audit and tax compliance.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated with strong ownership mentality.
- Proficient with MS Office, Teams, and SharePoint.
