CHN's preferred candidate for this role is a Haida citizen.    Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Haida Governance provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to support the effective governance of the Nation's sovereignty. This position is responsible for upholding and advancing the governance systems and relationships between the Elected Council, citizens, administration, and other stakeholders. The Director ensures alignment with the Nation's values, traditions, and self-determined governance practices, while also coordinating key internal decision-making and accountability structures.     KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare strategic advice, briefing materials, and policy recommendations for senior leadership, elected council, and others on governance matters and policy. 
  • Support and coordinate processes that strengthen Haida laws, governance protocols, and the implementation of Title Recognition and Aboriginal (Haida) rights. 
  • Develop, implement, and monitor governance frameworks, including policy and procedural development in line with Haida values, approaches and systems. 
  • Lead and manage the Nation's governance initiatives related to sovereignty and self-determination. 
  • Ensure clear communication and collaboration between CHN, Hereditary Chiefs Council, Band Councils, citizens, and administration.  
  • Guide the development of agendas, logistics, and documentation for Council meetings, joint council sessions, and other governance forums. 
  • Facilitate effective decision-making processes that respect and advance Haida ways of being  
  • Manage the Governance department team, setting work plans and ensuring delivery of high-quality services and reporting. 
  • Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team and ensure interdepartmental alignment on governance matters, ensuring that all program areas work in accordance with the Nation's governance structure. 
  • Maintain transparency by supporting clear and accessible communication of governance decisions, policies, and processes. 
  • Develop engagement tools and strategies to inform and engage citizens meaningfully in the Nation's governance. 
  QUALIFICATIONS
  • CHN's preferred candidate for this role is a Haida citizen.  
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in governance, policy development, or administration. 
  • Strong understanding of Haida governance systems, including hereditary structures, elected, and current systems. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations governments and communities in a leadership capacity. 
  • Excellent organizational, facilitation, and communication skills. 
  • Strong experience managing staff, budgets, and complex stakeholder relationships. 
  • Knowledge of Haida history, culture, and traditional governance systems. 
  • Familiarity with legal and political aspects of Indigenous title and rights in Canada. 
  • Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Relations, Public Administration, Political Science, Law, or a related field; Master's degree is an asset. 
  $54.58 – $61.25 per hour based on experience, full-time 35 hours per week. Benefit Package: Dental Care, Extended health care, Vision care, Disability Insurance, Life Insurance, Employee Assistance Program, Pension Plan, Paid time off.
