The University of Toronto is committed to recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty and academic staff. The Academic Human Resources Office provides support and expertise to academic units on the interpretation and application of policies and procedures governing academic appointments.

The Academic Human Resources Office supports academic administrators and their staff on the full spectrum of Academic HR matters, including recruitment, appointments, tenure, continuing status, promotion, leaves, workload, PTR and retirement. This office also supports academic units in respect of academic unionized employee groups including Teaching Assistants and Course Instructors (CUPE 3902, Unit 1), Sessional Lecturers and Writing Instructors (CUPE 3902, Unit 3) and Postdoctoral Fellows (CUPE 3902, Unit 5).

Your Responsibilities Will Include
Under the general direction of the Associate Director, Academic Human Resources, in the Faculty of Arts & Science, the incumbent provides a full range of academic human resource services to academic units within the Faculty. Using a broad range of understanding of the overall goals and objectives of the University and the Faculty, the incumbent reviews, advises and prepares correspondence on behalf of the Dean in matters relating to the employment of academic staff. The Academic HR Officer provides advice on the interpretation and application of HR policies and procedures as they pertain to academic searches, appointments, promotions, tenure, academic leaves, retirement options and salary administration to ensure compliance with University and Faculty of Arts & Science policies and procedures. In addition, they will participate in a variety of annual processes, such as, salary increases, research and study leaves and promotions. The incumbent develops and delivers training workshops for administrative staff on academic leaves, academic appointments, tenure and promotion reviews and provides one-on-one training to new administrative staff on academic policies and practices.

The Academic HR Officer will provide technical advice and expertise in relation to the interpretation and administration of collective agreements for CUPE 3902, Units 1, 3 and 5 Collective Agreements governing teaching assistants, course instructors, Sessional Lecturers and Postdoctoral Fellows.

Additionally, the incumbent will take on new tasks or projects, assume responsibility for on-going projects and undertake research on a wide variety of issues and topics related to academic human resources issues in A&S. The responsibilities of the incumbent will continuously evolve and they must be flexible and willing to respond to the given priorities of the day and be willing to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a dynamic environment.

Education
Essential Qualifications:
University degree or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience
Three years of recent and related administrative experience in a University setting. Knowledge of University policies and procedures and an understanding of the University's organizational structure, including its governance. Excellent knowledge of the University's academic policies and practices as they pertain to full-time and part-time academic appointments, tenure, promotions, leaves and salary administration. Significant experience with databases and systems and compiling and analyzing complex human resources information and data. Sound knowledge of collective agreement interpretation and administration.

Skills
Superior Excel skills, including the ability to use advanced functions. Proficiency in a Windows/Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Access). Strong research, writing, communication, presentation, interpersonal, analytical and numeracy skills. Demonstrated problem solving ability and excellent organizational skills.

Other
The incumbent is required to use initiative, strong judgment and analytical skills in handling complex/sensitive inquiries independently or referring them appropriately. As a representative of the Faculty, they are required to exercise a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and confidentiality regarding sensitive human resources issues.

Proven ability to work with academic administrators and others in a manner that facilitates cooperation and consensus building; ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative, discretion and tact; ability to work under pressure; superior organizational skills in planning and project management; flexibility and problem solving ability; well-developed data gathering and data analysis skills; comfort, facility and effectiveness with information technologies; considerable interpersonal sensitivity and diplomacy required.
