Thank you for your interest in joining Bladder Cancer Canada's Board of Directors. – Fill out formROLE: Reporting to the Chair of Bladder Cancer Canada, the Director's primary responsibility is to actively participate in the development of BCC strategic directions and policies, providing leadership, reviewing priorities, sharing perspectives, and raising issues to the Board and ensuring accountability and stewardship of resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of BCC's mission, goals, by-laws, financial position and board structure
  • Collaborate with Board Members, the Executive Director and the BCC Chair on current issues and challenges specific to BCC
  • Provide leadership and actively advocate for BCC's priorities including its fundraising efforts
  • Lead or participate in a project or area of expertise, as agreed upon by the board (e.g. Fundraising, BCC Awareness Walk, public awareness campaign)
  • Where appropriate, cultivate relationships, promote communication and act as a front-line representative with identified stakeholders, media, bladder cancer patients/caregivers and/or the general public
  • Develop an understanding of the disease and the current challenges that face bladder cancer patients/caregivers
  • Provide insight and recommendations to the board where appropriate regarding concerns relevant to your areas of expertise and experience (e.g. legal, IT, finance, communications, fundraising)
  • Create awareness of BCC and specific BCC events in your local area though various methods of communication
  • Use personal and professional skills, relationships, and knowledge for the advancement of BCC
  • On occasion, attend local meetings and/or special events as a representative of the organization

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of bladder cancer and the issues that face patients and/or caregivers or a strong desire to learn
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to participate effectively in face to face and virtual board meetings
  • Positive, motivated and enthusiastic
  • Professional background in healthcare, finances, HR, law, management and/or leadership experience considered an asset
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends, particularly related to health, cancer and the non-profit sector would be an asset.

TIME COMMITMENT & LOCATION:

  • 3-year term
  • Unless unavoidably absent, attend and participate in all board related meetings.
  • Attend local patient conferences and /or meetings as required
  • Full day board meetings are conducted 1 time per year in person (October) and via teleconference an additional 3-4 times per year
  • 1-4 hours per week may be required to respond to emails and/or telephone calls.
  • Additional time commitments may be required in the weeks and/or days leading up to meetings and/or special events and in the management of projects undertaken
  • Additional time may be required to support committee work e.g., Board standing committee and/or initiative-specific committee
