Job Summary
The Principal Legal Counsel position is responsible for providing strategic counsel and managing legal services to the company on labor and employment law matters. He/she will be a key player in ensuring compliance with federal and provincial employment laws governing the company's operations and will pro-actively develop policies, templates, and procedures in collaboration with the human resources department as well as the various business leaders. More specifically, the Principal Senior Counsel will:
- Provide strategic advice and guidance to the company on employment and labor law issues while ensuring consistency with McKesson's strategic and business objectives;
- Build and maintain influential relationships across the business, serving as a trusted advisor and strategic partner;
- Establish a legal framework that minimizes exposure for employment liability and legal risk associated with the execution of the business' strategic plan;
- Adress complex legal issues with creativity and foresight, leveraging legal expertise to anticipate future trends and risks
- Collaborate and consult effectively with other corporate functions including the McKesson corporate employment and benefits group to align on enterprise initiatives where appropriate;
- Demonstrate the highest integrity consistent with ICARE and ILEAD principles, setting a benchmark for professional and ethical conduct within the organization.
Work Arrangement
: This is a
hybrid position
requiring candidates to work
on-site at least 2 days per week
at either of our designated office location. The remaining days may be worked remotely, subject to team and business needs.
Specific Responsibilities
- Collaborate with business unit leaders and business unit human resource professionals to ensure deliver added-value advice regarding employment law risks arising in their work groups and take preventative action to head off potential problems.
- Responsible for the management and oversight of outside counsel in the defense of employment litigation.
- Represent the company from time to time as advocate in administrative agency proceedings.
- Assist as legal expert for Canada enterprise-wide projects that reduce employment law risk for the organization.
- Carry out other duties as may be requested by the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs.
- Ensures the timely provision of legal services required for the day-to-day management of business activities by the law department;
- Develops, drafts, reviews and negotiates key employment-related agreements and advises on employment issues related to mergers, acquisitions and divestitures.
- Provides strategic legal counsel and thought leadership on employment and labor matters;
- Ensures that company policies are implemented in collaboration with the Compliance department;
- Legal representative in cross-functional teams to address special projects, such as implementation of legislation, new services or products and risk management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Law degree from a recognized university;
- Member of the Ontario Bar
- 13+ years employment law experience, with a minimum of 8 years in a strategic legal role within health or retail sectors

- Recognized as an authority in employment law, with a proven track record of outstanding legal acumen and innovative problem-solving capabilities. A mix of law firm and in-house experience is a plus.
- Ability to think analytically and creatively and to problem solve, with a focus on current, innovative, and proactive approaches to employment and labor law. Anticipates future trends and consequences; has broad and deep legal knowledge and perspective.
- Demonstrated ability to implement strategic employment initiatives in a complex, matrixed organization. Exemplify McKesson's I2CARE values in all interactions.
- Effective Interpersonal and Influencing Skills: In order to be successful, the lawyer in this role must be able to proactively implement employment strategies in a highly matrixed organization.

- Proven leadership capabilities with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Bilingualism in English and French is a strong asset.

- Collaborer efficacement avec les autres fonctions corporatives, y compris le groupe corporatif de l'emploi et des avantages sociaux de McKesson, pour s'aligner sur les initiatives de l'entreprise ;

Modalité de travail

Responsabilités spécifiques
- Collaborer avec les leaders des unités d'affaires et les professionnels RH pour fournir des conseils à valeur ajoutée sur les risques juridiques liés à l'emploi et prendre des mesures préventives ;
- Gérer et superviser les avocats externes dans la défense des litiges liés à l'emploi ;
- Représenter l'entreprise ponctuellement devant les agences administratives ;
- Agir comme expert juridique pour les projets d'envergure canadienne visant à réduire les risques juridiques liés à l'emploi ;
- Accomplir d'autres tâches à la demande du Vice-président, Affaires réglementaires ;
- Assurer la prestation rapide des services juridiques nécessaires à la gestion quotidienne des activités ;
- Rédiger, examiner et négocier les principaux contrats liés à l'emploi et conseiller sur les questions d'emploi dans le cadre de fusions, acquisitions et cessions ;
- Fournir des conseils juridiques stratégiques et un leadership éclairé sur les questions de droit du travail ;
- Veiller à la mise en œuvre des politiques de l'entreprise en collaboration avec le département de la conformité ;
- Représenter le service juridique dans des équipes interfonctionnelles pour des projets spéciaux (mise en œuvre de législation, nouveaux services ou produits, gestion des risques).
Qualifications Minimales
- Diplôme en droit d'une université reconnue ;
- Membre du Barreau de l'Ontario ;
- 13+ années d'expérience en droit du travail, dont au moins 8 ans dans un rôle juridique stratégique dans les secteurs de la santé ou du commerce de détail.
