Position: Shelter Support Worker

Location: Kentville, NS

Position Overview:

If you have a background or understanding in Social Services, Community Support, or Human Services, and want to support people experiencing homelessness, this is a meaningful entry-level opportunity with room to grow.

Responsibilities:

You'll be part of our 24/7 shelter program, helping adults in crisis get the support they need. Your job is to offer both practical help (like food, clothing, and housing referrals) and compassionate guidance. In this role, you will:

  • Provide a safe and welcoming shelter environment
  • Support document readiness and housing navigation
  • Connect individuals with appropriate community supports
  • Keep clear records of your work and follow Open Arms' policies
  • Promote dignity, respect, and accountability in the shelter
  • Engage in daily tasks, including food preparation and cleaning

Qualifications:

  • Has understanding or experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Studied Social Services, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field, an asset
  • Is empathetic, resourceful, and calm under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal and soft skills to communicate effectively with various audiences
  • Wants to build a long-term career in community work or social services
  • Is ready to learn and grow in a fast-paced, people-focused role

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The rate of pay is $21 - $23/hour commensurate with experience. A $2/hour premium is offered for all night shifts.
  • You will receive 3 weeks of paid vacation per year.
  • After 3 months, you can join the group health benefit plan, with 50% of the premium paid by Open Arms.
  • You will be part of a supportive team, with regular team meetings, collaborative work, and opportunities for professional development and training.
  • Casual dress.
  • Ongoing training.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $21.00-$23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 32 – 40 per week
