Position and Title
- The Employee shall have the position and title of Assistant Wildlife Clinic Supervisor
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Summary: The incumbent in this position is responsible to provide rehabilitation care to injured and orphaned wildlife and assist in the daily operation of the facility.
Reporting and Supervision: This position is a supervisory position providing supervision and mentoring to junior staff and volunteers providing supervisory and animal care support to animal care related functions. This position will report to the Wildlife Clinic Supervisor. This position involves working as a member of the Calgary Wildlife team, most specifically with the Wildlife Clinic Supervisor and Wildlife Rehabilitators, maintaining positive and open communication with all center staff and volunteers. This position involves the direct supervision of junior and senior wildlife rehabbers and RVTs.
ACTIVITY A: Wildlife Rehabilitation (accounts for 75% of the incumbent's work)
1. Treatment:
· Provide treatment and care to patients as directed by the Wildlife Clinic Supervisor.
· Perform the following tasks as directed by the Wildlife Clinic Supervisor : tube/force feeding, bandage changes, physiotherapy, weigh animals, pre and post-operative care, medical protocols, and all other medical directives.
2. Laboratory Work:
· Collection of blood and fecal samples
· Assist as required in performing analysis and tests
3. Supervision of Volunteers and Staff:
· Encourage, and coordinate the activities of clinic staff and volunteers participating in daily activities and chores. Monitor their performance to ensure safety procedures are adhered. Report any concerns to Wildlife Clinic Supervisor.
· Assist in providing daily supervision and guidance to staff and volunteers to ensure an appropriate animal care environment is maintained.
4. Feeding:
· Ensure appropriate feeding of animals in care following the posted schedule and diets as prescribed by the Wildlife Clinic Supervisor and/or the veterinarian.
5. Cleaning & Maintenance:
· Ensure that all animal care facilities are maintained in a clean and safe condition
· Clean all interior and exterior holding cages and enclosures, providing fresh linings, bedding, food, and water dishes as indicated for each animal.
· Generally, perform daily general cleaning of the facility including the following tasks:
o Clean shelves, walls, fridges, counters, and floors
o Sweep and wash animal care building interiors
6. Ordering and Inventory:
· Completing regular inventory of supplies and food and ordering for the kitchen and hospital. Reporting to the Wildlife Clinic Supervisor regarding inventory on a regular basis.
ACTIVITY B: Wildlife transportation/ calls from the public (about 8% of incumbent's work time)
1. Wildlife Hotline:
· Respond to all phone calls from concerned members of the public, providing information and instructions on a case-by-case basis.
2. Animal transport to Calgary Wildlife:
· Coordinate volunteer transport of animals from veterinary clinics holding wildlife for collection
· Ensure veterinary release forms accompany the animal during transport by communicating with veterinary clinic and volunteers or other persons responsible for pick up.
· Coordinate transport of animals as requested by the public to Calgary Wildlife.
· Ensure that the person collecting the animal has the appropriate box or container and personal gear to provide safe transportation (lining, air holes, gloves…)
3. Wildlife Rescues
· Supervise and ensure that volunteers have the proper equipment and training to safely immobilize the animal if the animal is to be picked up at a private residence or location other than a veterinary clinic.
· Ensure volunteers are briefed and capable of doing a rescue if it is for an animal that is not already contained.
· Do rescues or pick-ups and transport animals to Calgary Wildlife as requested or when no other trained volunteer or other person is available.
ACTIVITY C: Record Keeping (about 7% of the incumbent's work time)
1. Wildlife Records:
· Ensure that each animal has veterinary release form as well as physical examination and treatment sheets if needed.
· Maintain detailed daily records of treatment administered to animals and observations such as weight (as indicated by senior staff or veterinarian), food intake, stool appearance, general physical appearance of the animal and temperament.
· Assist in maintaining updated files on released, euthanized or wildlife that died in care.
· Assist in entering data into computer files.
2. Other records:
· Maintain records of telephone calls received form the public and information or issues discussed and disposition of call.
· Ensure that volunteer work is accurately recorded into activity sheets.
ACTIVITY D: Communication (This accounts for 5% of incumbent's work time)
- Internal:
- Participate in maintaining open communications by providing case feedback to other staff members, either verbally or in a communications log.
- This position must support all other staff positions for all medical directives including euthanasia and referral to senior staff or veterinarian for veterinary care decisions.
- Taking photos and videos of patients and permanent residents for marketing and fundraising purposes and uploading them to data storage with relevant patient number connected to the WRMD system.
- Keep up to date with and respond to email communications in a timely manner.
2. External:
- Assist in maintaining positive relations between the Society, its volunteers, veterinary clinics, the public, as well as other associated organizations and agencies.

1. Perform other duties and projects within the scope of this position's work, as may be assigned by the Director of Wildlife Care and Services, Wildlife Clinic Supervisor, or Executive Director.
