We are seeking a casual individual to join our team The Community Housing Support Worker (CHSW) supports individuals in our Community Living Services programs with neurodevelopmental disabilities and complex neurobehavioural issues. Complex neurobehavioural issues may include, but are not limited to, substance misuse, struggles maintaining housing, dual diagnosis, and challenging behaviour(s) that put the individual at increased risk of criminal justice involvement/being criminalized. The CHSW works in collaboration with the Quality Service Lead and/or the Manager of Community Living Services in assessing and establishing service delivery goals (occupational, recreational, social, housing and financial) with those served. Where appropriate, they incorporate the input of family members and other community stakeholders. Position requires working independently with the person served in their home and in the community.

This person will execute their position in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Core values of the John Howard Society Okanagan & Kootenay.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with activities of daily living (e.g. meeting professional appointments, budgeting, shopping, recreational activities, and basic cooking/meal planning assistance)

  • Recognize, analyze, and address challenging and emergent situations

  • Collaborate with CLBC facilitators and those served to determine service plans/goals

  • Promote independence, safety, and overall quality of life

  • Support with medication monitoring or management

  • Use harm reduction and strengths-based approaches

  • Contribute towards positive behavioural support frameworks

  • Co-facilitate therapeutic, recreational, and educational social group activities

  • Exercise good judgement and professional boundaries

  • Maintain daily contact reports and conduct needs assessments

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, & EXPERIENCE
  • Diploma or degree in social, criminal justice, or behavioural sciences

  • 1-3 years work experience in similar field

  • Knowledge of housing continuum and barriers to accessing safe and affordable housing

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

  • Class 5 drivers licence, clean drivers abstract, and access to vehicle for work purposes

  • Able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check

  • Valid Basic First Aid certificate

  • Intermediate computer skills with ability and willingness to learn new programs
