The Municipality of Port Hope is hiring a Summer Student to support tourism readiness and early-stage tourism industry-building. This supervised position provides career-related experience in economic development, tourism, community research, and stakeholder engagement. 

Role Purpose: Strengthen municipal tourism readiness by delivering early-stage industry-building tasks (tourism business outreach, registry development, asset mapping, wayfinding assessment, and digital audits) and supporting visitor servicing during peak periods where required.

Compensation and Work Term
$18.54 to $20.11 per hour
June to August
Location: Hybrid (office-based work with field visits for mapping and business outreach)

Qualifications
  • Student currently enrolled in secondary or post-secondary education, or within six months of graduation. Post-secondary education in economic development, tourism management, or marketing would be considered an asset. 
  • Experience in Customer Service or Tourism role considered an asset. 
  • Experience living or working in Port Hope or surrounding area considered an asset.  
Responsibilities
  • Conduct a tourism business calling initiative, using a structured calling script to validate services, capture business needs, and identify opportunities and constraints related to visitor readiness. 
  • Undertake a digital audit of tourism-related businesses to assess online presence, accuracy of visitor information (hours, directions, booking), accessibility information, and overall readiness for inclusion in municipal channels. 
  • Build and maintain a tourism business registry including contact information, offer type, seasonality, accessibility notes, and visitor information quality indicators. 
  • Undertake a wayfinding assessment focused on visitor decision points (parking, washrooms, river access, cultural sites, trailheads, downtown anchors) and document gaps and quick-win recommendations. 
  • Perform an asset mapping exercise to catalog cultural sites, natural and built attractions, trails, public amenities, and related businesses, including underutilized and hidden assets identified through outreach. 
  • Support visitor servicing as needed during peak weekends or events by assisting with pop-up visitor information, distributing maps/itineraries, and logging common visitor inquiries.

  • Ability to coordinate and execute numerous tasks across multiple technologies, contacts, and projects. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to think creatively as part of team.

  • Valid and satisfactory 'G' driver's license and access to own vehicle.
  • Valid and satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check. 
  • Office environment with some field work and with some requirement to work hours outside of normal schedule.  
  • Some travel required 
  • Regular interruptions, competing priorities and time sensitive deadlines.
