Purpose and Role of Position:
Aligned with agency vision, mission, beliefs and model of care, the incumbent provides direction to staff providing services to individuals who have experienced abuse or violence, and their children. A priority for this position is the ongoing support and development of counselling staff. The incumbent ensures quality of counselling service; supervision and program development of shelter-based programs. There are two Managers, one at each shelter, working in collaboration to ensure a strategic and seamless view of overall shelter needs.

Job Summary:
This role’s priority focus is the counselling practice of residential staff including:

- Day to day mentoring / coaching and supervision of residential staff reflecting on their practice with residents and with each other
- On-going and weekly clinically informed supervision of staff
- Conducting annual formal performance appraisals with residential staff
- Collaboration with Leadership Team and community partners to ensure ‘best practice’ residential programs
- Follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act as to the specific duties of workplace supervisors as well as maintain basic Health and Safety Certification
- Oversight of the day to day operations of the shelter
- Promote internal teamwork and collaboration with other community partners in the delivery of agency programs and services

Job Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in Social Work; Women’s Studies, Psychological Counselling or relevant / equivalent studies
- Registered Social Worker (Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers) preferred
- Leadership certification
- Minimum three to five years of previous Leadership / Management experience
- Minimum five to seven years of counselling experience in a residential setting
- Strong leadership skills and certification / professional development in Trauma and Violence Informed Practice
- Proven client-centered approach that addresses the holistic need of all
- Extensive experience working with and advocating for those that have experienced abuse

Job Responsibilities Including But Not Limited To:
Responsibility: Staff Supervision / Development

The incumbent uses advanced counselling skills to support staff by:

- Assisting with both process and content of care
- Providing both formal and informal suggestions and training at the individual and group level according to evaluated needs
- Ensuring review and follow up of Incident Reports, Database notes, Plans of Action, and all other professional documents
- Providing clinically informed supervision including disciplinary action of all staff
- Providing written performance appraisal for supervised staff (collaborating with alternate Manager, Director of Programs and Services, and Director of Human Resources)
- Participating in the recruitment, hiring, orientation, and training of new staff
- Delivering and / or facilitating staff in-service and peer consultations
- Encouraging residential staff participation in, and sharing of, professional development and continuous learning opportunities
- Keeping self-updated in own profession, demonstrating continuous learning
- Promoting awareness of Vicarious Trauma, practicing and supporting self-care among residential staff
- Coordination of students on placement and support to residential staff mentoring them

Responsibility: Research
- Collaborate and participate in clinical research partnership with agency staff and partners including the design and collection of data to advance best practices
- Collaborate with the Director of Programs and Services and alternate Manager in ongoing evaluation and improvement of the Model of Care and all internal shelter programs and services
