**Title of the position**: Head, Research Support (Arts and Special Collections)

**Duties**:
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian (AUL), Research Services, the Head, Research Support (Arts and Special Collections) is responsible for both managerial and functional activities that take place within their department. In addition to these responsibilities, the incumbent is a member of the Library Management Group. The Head is responsible for building and maintaining relationships within and between divisions. The Head also ensures Library representation on appropriate internal and external bodies and in key library associations.

Together with the Library Management Group, the Head is expected to foster an inclusive, accessible environment in the context of a university community that values and promotes principles of equity, diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The Head leads and supervises a team responsible for providing services in support of research and scholarship in the Faculty of Arts and in the digital humanities with the goal of advancing the research mission of the University of Ottawa. The incumbent leads and participates in delivering relevant and timely services to support research activities and teaching tailored to meet the needs of its disciplinary communities. Members of the team, including the Head, have a broad scope of work and activities, which include, but are not limited to, expert search services, teaching and education, research consultations, and community engagement. The Head promotes opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange, especially with the increasing importance of digital tools and technologies in Arts.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the Library’s special collections and unique materials in support of teaching and research. These special collections and unique materials include cartographic information and GIS, as well as digital and analog archival materials and rare books managed by the Archives and Special Collections (ARCS) unit. Donor relations are an important aspect of managing these materials and the incumbent, in collaboration with the AUL, Research Services and the Head of ARCS, ensures that these relationships are cultivated and sustained for the benefit of researchers and students.

In collaboration with the AUL, Research Services and other Research Services department Heads, the incumbent defines, implements, and assesses service offerings. All departments in this division contribute to the work of the Library’s interdepartmental and interdivisional teams, such as the Interdisciplinary Data Team, to ensure a seamless and positive user experience.

The Head is a member of the Management Group and works collectively with other members to:

- Provide input to the AULs on strategic planning processes and operationalize strategic plans
- Collaborate with other members of the Library Management Team to meet Library-wide objectives and coordinate cross-departmental workflows to avoid gaps and overlaps
- Develop and recommend creative solutions through policy changes, resource allocation, and new initiatives
- Interpret and communicate Library direction, decisions, and impacts as appropriate
- Explore new ways of achieving the Library's goals by, for example, challenging legacy practices

**Terms**:Preliminary appointment leading to continuing appointment.

**Wage**: Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

**Skills requirements**:

- **Education**: A Master's degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent.

- University degree or related experience in one of the following disciplines: education, law, management or social sciences.
