DescriptionThe Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine (Faculty), University of Ottawa (uOttawa) and The Ottawa Hospital (TOH/Hospital) is looking for a visionary leader with excellence in academic and clinical leadership to be its next Head of the Division of General Internal Medicine.The Division of General Internal Medicine comprises of 30 full-time and 25 part-time General Internal Medicine specialists with a range of expertise. The General Internal Medicine inpatient team staffs 6 traditional Clinical Teaching Units, 3 non-traditional teaching teams, and 4 consultation services. We have a dedicated Obstetrical Medicine service as well as a Point of Care Ultrasound Service. The division supports academic work with a part-time research assistant, work-in-progress research rounds, and administrative support. We offer robust ambulatory care opportunities in various clinics aligned with the interests of a diverse academic GIM service such as perioperative medicine, general medicine, liver disease, vascular risk reduction, and obstetrical medicine. We are situated within the Department of Medicine which provides support for members with mentorship, research support, quality improvement methodology support, academic promotion support and a benefit plan.The Ottawa Hospital is a bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50, inpatient admissions, , emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2, researchers are publishing more than 2, studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately peer-reviewed publications annually.The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. As the most research-intensive Faculty at the University of Ottawa, the Faculty of Medicine contributes significantly to the University being ranked 5th in the country for total research revenues (Research InfoSource), routinely 2nd or 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science grants (McLean’s), 4th in Canada for citations ( THE rankings) and 1st for overall growth in Tri-council funding over the past two decades. Ottawa boasts numerous cultural activities as well as readily accessible sporting and natural resources, making it an ideal family and healthy living environment.ResponsibilitiesThe Division Head is accountable to the Chair/Head of the Department of Medicine in fulfilling the mission, vision and goals of the Department, the Hospital and the Faculty, in particular as they relate to the Division. The Division Head holds a joint appointment as the university head for academics and hospital head for clinical services.The Division Head is part of the leadership team of the Department of Medicine. As such, the Division Head will work with department, hospital, and faculty leadership. This role will require on average two days per week for administrative activities with the remainder of time dedicated to clinical, academic and/or research activities. The Division Head will collaborate with the Department Chair/Head to set annual goals and objectives.QualificationsThe successful candidate will have demonstrated academic and clinical leadership as well as strong organizational skills. The vision for the Division of General Internal Medicine includes a strong commitment to build on the current academic successes including post-graduate education.The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for certification in General Internal Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.Job BenefitsThe income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as a stipend.
