To qualify for this summer student position, students must currently be enrolled in school full-time for the 2024/2025 winter term (normally ending April, May or June) and/or returning to school full-time in the 2025 fall term (normally starting in August or September).

**Job description**

This is a public service position primarily within the Chatham Branch of Chatham-Kent Public Library, with potential travel to any of 11 library branches. The Summer Reading Program Student’s primary responsibility is to assist with the implementation of children’s Summer Reading programs; this includes assisting with the distribution of promotional material, displaying resources and promotional materials, registration of participants, assisting with the preparation of programs, assisting with programs at community branches, gathering programming statistics.

**Essential responsibilities**
- Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
- Actively participate in Municipal and Library training as necessary
- Create promotional displays for the TD Summer Reading Club theme
- Create displays of library materials, which highlight various aspects of the library's children's collection
- Assist library staff with promoting the Summer Reading Program
- Provide program assistance at all branch locations as needed
- Assist and prepare for theme related programs offered at any CKPL branch location
- Assist as needed at all Reading Club parties held throughout the system
- Assist with the creation and distribution of summer reading kits to all CKPL branch locations
- Organize, prepare and refresh age appropriate crafts on a weekly basis
- Assist Library staff with registration of children for the Summer Reading Program
- Track and prepare a final report on the number of children registered in the summer reading program throughout the entire library system

**Essential qualifications**
- Currently in a community college or university students; preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a library, education or childcare program, or who have a desire to pursue an education in these areas
- Experience working in a library environment
- Experience organizing programs for children, preferably in a library environment; experience working with children in either a recreational or educational environment will be considered
- Experience creating literacy based programs
- Demonstrates courtesy, sensitivity and responsiveness when interacting with patrons and staff
- Ability to communicate with the public, staff and administration in a clear, friendly and effective manner that encourages dialogue and interaction
- Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, exhibiting courtesy, sensitivity and responsiveness in behaviour and tone when interacting with patrons and staff
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office suite

**Other qualifications**
- Good organizational and people skills, neatness and attention to detail, and the ability to work independently would be an asset

**Work environment/hours of work**
- This position works mostly indoors
- This position works weekday, afternoon, evening and weekend hours

**COVID-19 Vaccination**

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

**Driver’s licence/vehicle requirements**

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's license with a reliable motor vehicle is preferred.

**Benefits**

This summer student position has an hourly wage of $17.20 will receive vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
