**Purchasing Agent**
**Position Summary**
Responsible for purchasing and expediting supplies and select production materials/components to support production and plant operations. This role supports supplier relationships, assists with negotiating pricing and terms, helps resolve delivery and quality issues, and supports inventory control initiatives in a Lean manufacturing environment. This role is best suited for an early-career purchasing professional who enjoys fast-paced coordination, supplier follow-up, and supporting plant operations.
**Work Environment**
This position works primarily in an office environment with frequent interaction and coordination on the manufacturing floor.
**Duties & Responsibilities**
- Purchase and expedite materials for Operations to meet quality, cost, and delivery requirements.
- Create, issue, and manage purchase orders (POs) and follow up with suppliers to ensure on-time delivery.
- Confirm supplier order acknowledgement and maintain due dates/lead times in ERP.
- Support the purchase of capital items and/or support services as required.
- Request quotes and support negotiations for pricing, terms, discounts, and delivery schedules with suppliers.
- Benchmark pricing and identify alternate sources to ensure competitive cost and continuity of supply.
- Maintain positive supplier relationships and escalate issues or disputes related to quality, delivery, shortages, or pricing.
- Manage backorders, late deliveries, and shortages proactively to protect production schedules.
- Coordinate resolution of damaged or incorrect shipments with suppliers and Accounts Payable, including credits/returns.
- Support invoice discrepancies and 3-way match issues (PO/receipt/invoice) in coordination with Accounts Payable.
- Monitor inventory levels and help forecast material requirements to support operational needs and inventory targets.
- Review daily production schedules/forecasts to determine purchasing priorities and material requirements.
- Assist with inventory transactions and cycle counts as required.
- Support cost reduction initiatives for purchased components and services.
- Identify supply chain risks and support mitigation actions (alternate suppliers, safety stock, lead time updates, etc.).
- Participate in Lean/Continuous Improvement initiatives and promote 5S.
**Key Performance Expectations**
- Purchase orders entered accurately and on time.
- Supplier confirmations obtained and delivery dates maintained in ERP.
- Expedites/backorders managed proactively to prevent production interruptions.
- Support inventory accuracy through cycle counts and transaction discipline.
- Professional communication with internal departments and suppliers.
**Qualifications & Skills**
- Post-secondary education in Materials Management, Purchasing, Supply Chain, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 1-3 years experience in a purchasing/procurement role (manufacturing environment preferred).
- Basic understanding of purchasing ethics, concepts, and best practices.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
- Professional communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to build relationships across departments.
- Proficient with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office (Excel required).
- Strong Excel skills (filters, lookups, basic pivot tables preferred).
- Self-motivated, team-oriented, and able to work independently when needed.
- Experience in Lean manufacturing environments is an asset.
- Manufacturing facility experience considered an asset.
- Experience with vendor portals is preferred.
- Familiarity with MRP/ERP purchasing workflows (reorder points, min/max, lead times) is preferred.
Pay: From $50,000.00 per year
