Primary Focus
The Digital Publishing Specialist has expertise on XML-first publishing software, helps ensure the publishing workflow is efficient and seamless, and manages the publication of articles on an Open Journal Systems platform for the Canadian Journal of Health Technologies.
What do the daily responsibilities look like?
**On any given day, the Digital Publishing Specialist will**:

- support the publishing workflow, which includes styling and formatting Word documents; exporting XML metadata; solving parsing errors; proofreading for structural or stylistic errors; and converting from Word to XML, InDesign, PDF, HTML, and ePub
- train staff using the software, troubleshoot issues, and streamline production workflows
- develop, update, and maintain the journal platform for the Canadian Journal of Health Technologies
- publish articles in PDF, HTML, and ePub and manage content on the journal platform
- prepare journal usage reports
- work with external help desk teams to resolve issues
- package and send appropriate files and metadata to the NLM Bookshelf and abstracting and indexing services
- develop new and update existing product templates in Typefi and InDesign
- maintain consistent corporate branding for all publications
- document procedures for preparing and converting content
- manage time and deliverables within the scope of the publishing schedule
- stay current on emerging issues in digital publishing and best practices.

Is this the right role for you?
**The Digital Publishing Specialist will likely have**:

- a diploma or degree in 1 of the following or related fields: digital publishing, graphic design, or desktop publishing; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
- experience in publication design, graphic design, and basic website development is essential
- advanced knowledge of InDesign tables, cross-referencing, long-form documents, and accessibility features
- a solid understanding of web technologies, including XML, HTML, CSS, and GREP
- experience creating and editing graphics
- high-level desktop publishing software literacy (e.g., Microsoft Word)
- experience and comfort troubleshooting digital technologies
- knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and web accessibility issues and best practices
- patience, determination, and a strong desire to learn new skills is required
- strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to explain technical information to a nontechnical audience
- experience managing projects, prioritizing among multiple projects, and meeting deadlines
- excellent time management skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
- the ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively in teams.
