**ABOUT THE ROLE**

Reporting to the Program Manager, or a Project Manager as assigned by the Program Manager, the Design Technician will be responsible for the completion of detailed designs of underground and aerial utility infrastructure permitting projects.

**ACCOUNTABILITIES**
- Examine aerial and underground project functional requirements, establish design concept and parameters, and develop or confirm survey, CAD, and engineering project scoping.
- Support survey technician field exercises with prompt response to scoping questions.
- Support CAD technicians in preliminary design drawing development with prompt response to scoping and preliminary design questions.
- Complete, or lead, review, and validate detailed underground or aerial design to minimum utility or governing authority standards.
- Complete AutoCAD drawings and other technical document updates.
- Prepare and compile final drawings and reports for stamping engineers.
- Gather outdoor field data for existing road rights of way, pole lines and other structures as required.
- Data gathering is achieved by a combination of manual and digital survey techniques. In addition, pole inspection is required to determine the structural integrity of the pole.
- Support UTS Program/Project Managers in providing technical response to client and regulating authority questions.

**Qualifications**
- Degree or Diploma in civil or electrical engineering is required.
- Intermediate working knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with an emphasis in MS Excel.
- OACETT or PEO member is considered an asset.
- Experience in underground telecommunication engineering and design and municipal consent permitting preferred.
- Experience in telecommunication cable design environment considered an asset.
- Familiarity with:

- CSA C22.3 No.1 Overhead Systems and Ontario Regulation 22/04 is an asset.
- Typical hydro and telecom pole framing standards adopted in Ontario is an asset.
- Ontario LDC third party attachment processes is an asset.

**SUCCESS FACTORS**
- Strong understanding of engineering principals and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and in writing.
- Ability to work in a high‐performance environment, deal with customers in a professional manner, and willingness to travel primarily within Ontario as required for utility projects.
- Working knowledge in SPIDACalc and Quick Pole.
- Understanding of safety codes including ESA 22/04 and CSA 22.3 No. 1-20.
- Willingness to learn and train those in need.
