Consistently ranked among the top 10 medical schools in Canada, our faculty is among the top faculties of medicine in the world for research impact in biomedical and health sciences. **Position Purpose** The Director, Research Office contributes to the Faculty of Medicine’s research strategy by leading, directing and undertaking strategic activities and projects to advance the research mandate of the Faculty and affiliated hospital research institutes. Provides expert advice to the Vice-Dean Research, Faculty leadership and stakeholders. Provides leadership to the Research Office in the development and implementation of initiatives, programs and policies that support the growth and expansion of the Faculty of Medicine’s research portfolio (>$140M/yr). In addition, they respond to the needs of the research community and forge strong institutional relationships through negotiated agreements, communications, and networking activities within the University and affiliated research institutes as well as with external stakeholders, including sponsors. **Specific Accountabilities**: **Enhances the Faculty of Medicine’s global leadership in research through the identification and development of strategic priorities**:Conducts and delivers on strategic research planning activities (environmental scans, consultations, strategic research plans, HR plans, progress monitoring/rankings) and provides expert advice on the prioritization and development of strategic areas of development in research. Maintains up to date knowledge of institutional, provincial, national and international trends and developments impacting the Canadian research landscape in order to identify new opportunities and emerging areas of priority for future investment of resources; **I**dentifies and leads the development of structures, programs and policies to support research teams, the Faculty and the University in the pursuit of research excellence.** Leads project teams in the planning, development and management of of research Centres and Institutes, partnerships and networks, funding programs, core facilities, Chairs and Awards. Coordinates stakeholder consultation, project development and ensures efficient communication between participants. Works with the leadership team to develop and implement institutional strategies to attract talent, infrastructure, and operational funds to support existing and emerging strategic priorities. Develops, implements and administers internal funding programs valued at ~$2M/yr (e.g., international programs, student programs, Research Chairs programs). **Forges strong institutional relationships through formal and informal representations within the university and affiliated institutes and with external stakeholders**:Leads and promotes effective working relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the development of joint policy, agreements and initiatives (e.g., joints recruitment, joint reviews, MOUs, Contracts). Expert advisor on the broad research landscape and complex organizational structures of the Faculty, affiliated institutes and partners. Represents the Faculty and affiliated institutes in formal and informal consultations and on decision-making bodies impacting research administration and infrastructure, informing policy and programming to ensure that administrators and researchers are represented and informed of changing requirements. **Oversees research operations and promotes excellence in research support delivery through the Faculty of Medicine’s Research Office**:Ensures appropriate research operational and development support to Faculty of Medicine and affiliated research institute partners (>1300 scientists, clinician investigators, and research staff) requiring assistance and problem solving related to research operations as well as research funding, prize and award nominations, strategic planning, and special projects. Oversees the distribution and management of all research portfolios and research development staff to provide leadership, guidance and to ensure the delivery of efficient, responsive, and accountable research administrative services and processes.
