We are looking for a Research Council Officer in Extractive Metallurgy to join the Mineral Processing team to support the Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre. This person would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

The Extractive Metallurgist’s primary duty is to deliver innovative solutions to selective leaching and precipitation of novel battery precursors from primary and secondary sources. You will work closely with researchers and technical experts from the Energy Mining and Environment Mississauga (EME-MIS) site to develop self-driving laboratories (processing acceleration platforms). In this role, you will provide metallurgical expertise and help support the EME-MIS team. You will lead a small project team in delivering conventional benchscale to mini-pilot testing to validate and scale up the processes discovered by the self-driving laboratory.

Your principal responsibilities will include the following:

- The conception and direction of project scope.
- Design, execution, and quality control of benchscale to mini-pilot scale testing.
- Lead day to day execution of a small project team.
- Reporting key findings to program management.

**Screening Criteria**:
**Education**:
Master’s degree from a recognized institution in Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field.

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field combined with significant experience in the field may be considered.

**Experience**:

- Significant experience in hydrometallurgy demonstrated through the development and management of related projects, presentations at conferences and events, publications, etc.
- Significant experience in test design, analysis including data collection and analysis, overseeing data production, and ensuring data quality.
- Experience in technology development in extraction and purification.
- Familiarity with concepts of self driving laboratory including: a) laboratory automation, b) AI/ML approaches and data science, and c) in-situ elemental characterization.

**Note**:Significant experience is defined by a minimum of 3 years of experience.

**Technical Competencies**:

- Deep theoretical understanding of hydrometallurgical processes, especially leaching and solution chemistry.
- Solid knowledge of the principles and methods in complex metallurgical processes.
- Solid hands-on experience with one or more extraction and purification methods, including but not limited to solvent extraction, ion exchange, solid phase extraction, and electrochemical separation.
- Knowledge of innovation trends in extractive metallurgy.
- Basic knowledge of project management principles and practices related to planning, monitoring, execution of project plans and the ability to manage risks.
