**Working for the** **Department of East Asian Studies**
The Department of East Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary home for research and education about the societies and cultures of China, Korea and Japan, run by scholars working in the social sciences, humanities and fine arts. Our undergraduate program emphasizes giving students high levels of language proficiency in Chinese, Korean and Japanese language, while also giving them the cultural understanding to be effective professionals in a variety of business and government careers relating to Asia. At the graduate level, our MA program gives students intensive scholarly training in field-specific research methods, and has an excellent success rate placing them in top PhD programs in Canada and the United States.
**Position**
The Department of East Asian Studies of the University of Alberta is seeking to hire a term Academic Teaching Staff instructor for Fall and Winter semesters of the 2025-26 academic year. This is a non-tenurable position.
**Duties**
- Teaching of the designed course during Winter semester 2026.
- Meet with the chair of the Department of East Asian Studies on a monthly basis to discuss progress of the course design during fall, and implementation of the course during winter.
Course Design Specifications:
- Fifteen weeks’ worth of modules: 1 week of introduction including an introductory video, syllabus, and other important policy documents; 6 weeks of lessons on pre-Qin Confucianism; 1 week midterm; 6 weeks of lessons on Confucianism’s influence on the later culture and history of China, up through the modern period; and 1 week final exam.
- Each of the twelve weeks of substantive lessons should be structured as follows: 1 required reading, 1 voice-over-PowerPoint video lecture about the reading, 1 ten-question multiple-choice quiz on the reading and the video lecture, and one simulated “in-class” exercise that engages student learning in creative ways, without the need for individual grading of each response.
- The midterm exam and final exam must consist of 50 multiple-choice questions each.
- In order to maintain academic integrity, questions the midterm and final exams, and all weekly quizzes, must be drawn randomly from question banks limited to those weeks. Each question bank must contain three times the number of questions being put to students (hence 30 questions total for each quiz, 150 questions total for the midterm and the final exam).
- No designed course materials may be plagiarized, created with AI assistance, or otherwise violate academic integrity standards.
**Qualifications**
- Eligibility to work legally in Canada.
- Eligibility to work on an ATS contract at the University of Alberta.
- Record of excellence in online course design, especially in Canvas.
- Record of welcoming a diverse student body, and of managing an online classroom with students of different backgrounds and proficiency levels.
