Maternal Child Health Worker

**PURPOSE**:Working within the Hwialusmutul’ Team, under direction of the Senior Nurse Program Manager and in collaboration with the Community Health Nurses (CHN’s) and other health team members, the Maternal Child Health Worker will provide maternal child health promotion services and programming to expectant mothers and families with young children ages 0-6 years. This is a full-time, permanent, unionized position that works primarily in the office with moderate local travel required.
**COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS**: Cowichan Tribes offers an excellent benefit and pension plan available after successful completion of the probationary period. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $28.60 - $30.32 per hour ($52, 045.49 - $55,187.23 annually).
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Provide Maternal Child Health Promotion Services**:
- Ensure Cowichan culture, Hul’q’umi’um’ language, values, and traditions are integrated into program activities
- Advocate and liaise for families receiving health care, housing, Child & Family, and social development services
- Conduct clinic, home, and community visits that focus on culture, mentorship, role modelling, health teaching, and linking with community resources
- Plan and conduct individual and group programs, workshops and learning sessions related to Maternal Child Health
- Provide practical assistance with parenting skills, such as basic infant care, healthy child development, self-care, and coping strategies
- Ensure timely documentation and communication
- Participate in a variety of internal and external committees and working groups
- Ensure strict confidentiality and cultural safety of all clients while receiving health services
- Attend monthly department meetings and weekly team meetings
- Conduct formal evaluation of program sessions with participants and staff
- Other related duties
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (please attach all required documents)**
- Certificate in Early Childhood Education, Infant Development, Child & Youth Care or related is required
- Diploma or Degree in Early Childhood Education, Infant Development, Child & Youth Care or related is an asset
- 1 year experience in the field of maternal child health
- Experience working in a First Nations community
- Certification in First Aid / CPR-C / Foodsafe
- BC Drivers’ License and reliable vehicle
- Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector check
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:
- Strong knowledge of Cowichan culture, Hul’q’umi’um’ language, customs, and traditions relating to pregnancy, birth, and parenting or willingness to learn
- Ability to role model effective and nurturing parenting skills and positive parent-child interaction with a non-judgmental approach and acceptance of each family
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and as a member of a team
- Able to foster and build relationships within community
- Well-developed written, oral, and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to meet physical demands of Maternal Child Health Worker duties: move up and down with ease, sit on floor, bend and stoop to meet children’s eye level, long periods of standing and walking with the ability to lift up to 25lbs
